Were Bears waiting on Niners receivers coach John Morton?

Marc Trestman still needs a receivers coach on his staff.

And given NFL rules, it's fair to wonder if the Bears were waiting on an assistant from the Baltimore Ravens or San Francisco 49ers. John Morton.jpg

The only candidate from the Ravens appears to be Craig Ver Steeg, a senior assistant, but it's believed he's under contract.

On the 49ers staff, John Morton makes the most sense.

He's the current receivers coach, and he certainly deserves credit for the development of Michael Crabtree and other young receivers who have contributed, including Kyle Williams.

And Morton has a tie with Trestman, working with him in Oakland from 2001 to 2003.

Before joining the Niners, Morton was the receivers coach at Southern California for four years.

Two-year deals are fairly standard for position coaches, and Morton just completed his second season. But it's unclear if he received an extension at some point.

Morton originally signed with Oakland as an undrafted rookie wide receiver in 1993. He played at Western Michigan and played in the CFL for a few seasons.
