Last year, Bears special teams coordinator Dave Toub interviewed for the Miami Dolphins head coaching vacancy.
On Monday, he officially interviewed for the Bears opening, according to a league source. ![]()
Bears general manager Phil Emery reportedly met with CFL coach Marc Trestman in the Chicago area, so he likely also met with Toub at the team's headquarters in Lake Forest.
Like many other assistant coaches on the Bears staff, Toub remains under contract to the club until Lovie Smith's replacement is hired.
Toub is the fourth special teams coordinator Emery has interviewed or scheduled an interview with. He's already met with Keith Armstrong of the Atlanta Falcons and Joe DeCamillis of the Dallas Cowboys, and he'll talk to Mike Priefer of the Minnesota Vikings later this week.
The Bears special teams unit consistently ranks among the NFL's top 10, and Toub has helped Devin Hester break numerous return records.

I could be wrong and totally off-base, but I do not think special teams' coaches would necessarily make good head coaches. The duties of each seem to me to be too disparate. I think Toub is great where he is and hope he stays, but one cannot help remembering a blocked field goal being run back against the bears.
John Harbaugh was a special teams coach.
OK so we have assistant coaches, former head coaches, college coaches, CFL coaches...maybe Brett Favre is available from the high school level to add to this growing list of possible replacements!!!!
Yeah, Anonymous, it does seem a bit like overkill.
I strongly believe that Dave Toub would be a very special coach, no pun intended.
Creative, team guy, Players love him and work hard for him. He has seen it all and has the offensive and defensive mind to bring the whole package together.
My first vote Is for Dave Toub.i am sure that the family, Phillips and Emery are listening.
You the man Toub!
