Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians is one of the hotter candidates to become a head coach. And while he's scheduled to interview with the Bears Sunday, he expressed an interest in the San Diego Chargers vacancy because of a recent hire.
The Chargers hired Tom Telesco as general manager, after he'd served as the vice president of player personnel with the Colts.
So could Arians go from the Colts to the Bolts?
"I would be now that Tommy's there," Arians said on The Mighty 1090 in San Diego, via Sports Radio Interviews. "I think so much of [the] success that teams have are great relationships between general manager and head coach. And it's not who has control of the roster, it's how do we get the best players?
"I had the opportunity to work for 12 weeks as a head coach this year with [Colts general manager] Ryan Grigson and Tommy Telesco, and it was a fantastic relationship. And I wouldn't want to work in any other situation as a head coach, unless it's that type of relationship where nobody's got a power player [and] we're all in this together trying to win."
Those comments, though, are encouraging for the Bears. General manager Phil Emery does have final say on authority, but he takes a team-first approach to making decisions.
Arians made clear that the Bears asked for permission to speak to him first, which is why they're the only club to formally schedule time with him.
"I have a great job in Indianapolis. It's going to have to be a perfect fit for me to leave what we have done here, and not just to jump out to be a head coach," Arians said. "It's going to have to be a perfect fit, and obviously my relationship with Tommy makes it a lot easier."
Asked about timing, Arians said he wants to move "extremely quickly."
"If it's gonna happen I'd like to have it done before next Friday."
As for his health, Arians said he's feeling much better after dealing with an inner-ear infection.
"I couldn't stand up and it affected my blood pressure," he said. "They're still doing some different tests but we've got it nailed down to that."
Arians declared himself as "healthy as a horse."
