I'm not sure if it's clumsy wording or if it's precisely the way it's intended, but the Buffalo Bills official website suggested former Bears coach Lovie Smith initiated contact with the club and its search committee "obliged."
The lead to the Bills' website story on Smith's interview is: "He expressed a genuine interest in the Buffalo coaching vacancy and the Bills coaching search committee obliged as they sat down with former Bears head coach Lovie Smith."
Buffalobills.com then confirmed the interview took place Friday.
But Smith wasn't the only coach the Bills interviewed Friday.
The club also interviewed Oregon coach Chip Kelly and Syracuse coach Doug Marrone in Arizona.
Smith hasn't commented publicly since the Bears fired him on Monday. The Bills were the first team he was linked to, along with the San Diego Chargers.

It's a mix of clumsy wording and the kind of general buffoonery we Bills fans have grown accustomed to over the years. They're trying to make the position appear to be highly sought after. None of the people in this operation (except Doug Whaley) are either articulate or very bright - from Brandon to Nix down to Chris Brown, though the latter seems to be a nice guy. They're all just...kind of idiots.
Lovie would unquestionably be an upgrade over Chan Gailey - or anyone the Bills have had since Wade Phillips. So clearly the only course of action is to backhand him. Sigh.
Of course they "obliged", he is likely only viewed as meeting the affirmative action rule the NFL requires.
Haha! Looks like they changed the wording on the story, Sean. Now it reads:
"He expressed a genuine interest in the Buffalo coaching vacancy and the feeling of the Bills coaching search committee was mutual as they sat down with former Bears head coach Lovie Smith."
It is hilarious that he forced himself on them for an interview. I guess he wasn't exactly on the short list, which shows promise on their part.
Not Rooney rule as Bills had already interviewed Ray Horton
