Matt Forte says Bears runs were often "obvious"

Bears running back Matt Forte, who averaged a dismal 2.4 yards per run Sunday, credited the Houston Texans defense for his forgettable night.

But he felt the Bears also made it easier on the Texans. Forte 2.jpg

"It's kind of like we ran the ball at the time when it was kind of like obvious we were going to run the ball," Forte said. "Plus, it was a sloppy game.

"I don't know. You got to give them credit; they got a good defense, too. We have to establish the run more."

The Bears finished the 13-6 loss with 115 rushing yards on 23 carries, a solid five-yard average. But quarterback Jay Cutler earned 37 of those on three runs.

Forte's 39 rushing yards is his lowest output in a game in which he played. The low (31 yards) came against the Green Bay Packers, when he injured his ankle.

Forte, though, isn't frustrated.

"It's only half way so I'm not too frustrated about that. I know I'm going to receive the ball when my time comes," he said.

Forte said offensive coordinator Mike Tice is still trying to figure out how to use his assorted weapons.

"Once we figure that out," Forte said, "I think we'll be OK."

Forte was at Park Grill Chicago, where he treated players from the Tilden High School Football team to lunch. The team has just 16 players, and they've won just one game in four seasons. Forte was encouraging them for their perseverance, surprising the players with laptop computers.

"I'm going to pay Santa Claus today," Forte said before the lunch.

Forte said the losing has to be "demoralizing," but he wanted to emphasize to the players that they are doing things the right way.

"Even if they don't [win], if they play hard and work hard, it's still worth it," he said. "You can still be successful."

if tice does not know how to use his players by now bears are really cooked

Wonderful to hear that Matt Forte is encouraging younger players who need some.

Its nice to hear a player like Matt Forte can take time out and encourage some high school players who need it. Kudos to the Sun Times for telling us about it, the media seems to concentrate on the "bad" players, like a certain running back up in Minnesota..cough cough AP cough cough who is getting himself out of trouble right now. Basically, its nice to hear Forte is one of the few "good" NFL stars out there.

As for the play calling sunday night, in Tice's defense, when you're down, which the Bears were for most of the game, you tend to pass more to try and catch up. Also, its pretty obvious the Texans were gonna take away the run game, especially when Cutler went down, forcing the Bears to make plays via the air, which they didn't. One of the few bright spots on offense was the fact Chicago allowed zero sacks, other than that, this offense needs work, lots of work, I hope Cutler can go monday night, I have my doubts in Jason Campbell? Hope he proves me wrong if he gets the start because the 49ers are hard to run on like the Texans, if Campbell starts, he simply has to make some plays as a passer or the Bears will loose, should be interesting GO BEARS!!

The issue with the Bears on Sunday once Cutler went down was the Texans sat on the run, daring Campbell to make the throws necessary to beat them. Cutler would have sliced up an opportunity like that--in his place, Campbell took the check down receiver almost every time. It looked like he was playing not to make a mistake, hoping the Defense would step up and score. Ater the game, Campbell said he had "not had the snaps in practice", which I find interesting as he is their #2.

In any event, if Cutler is out for the next game then Campbell needs to prove he is the stud #2 (if there is a such a thing) by making some throws and leading drives.

i know right? campbell looked a lot worse than forgettable. even with coming in pretty cold, the guy gets a big paycheck to not suck when his number is called. i hope someone is pointing out to the offense that 2-4 yard passes at the end of a close game where you need to score is usually a bad idea.
