With starter Jay Cutler needing to pass the league's concussion protocol, the Bears are expected to re-sign veteran Josh McCown as insurance, according to a league source.
Cutler and Jason Campbell are the only two quarterbacks on the active roster; rookie Matthew Blanchard is on the team's practice squad.
McCown, 33, has bounced around the league. But he endeared himself to the Bears last season, when he was signed as a backup to Caleb Hanie. McCown got the start in the season finale against the Minnesota Vikings and completed 15 of 25 passes for 160 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The Bears won the game 17-13. ![]()
On Sunday night, Bears coach Lovie Smith didn't rule Cutler, who didn't play in the second half, out for next Monday's game in San Francisco. Cutler, though, will not make his weekly Monday appearance on ESPN 1000, a reporter from ESPN Chicago wrote on his Twitter account.
But Cutler must be cleared by team doctors and an independent consultant before he can return to the practice field.
49er quarterback Alex Smith will have to do the same thing because he was knocked out of Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams with a concussion.
Campbell, who is on a one-year deal, completed 11 of 19 passes for 94 yards.

With the Bears poor OL Protection, any quarterback should throw the ball away on the snap!
For the love of God, would someone cut Kellen Davis from this team or never send him out on a pass play again? How could you be so much bigger than Danieal Manning (a guy with a girl's first name) and get hammered like that? What a clown.
Josh McCown? Again?
The Bears REFUSE to admit they made a mistake by not actively looking to upgrade their O-line. Any QB you put back there is a siting duck.
They also made a HUGE mistake by letting Greg Olsen go.
He wasn't much of a blocker but he was a good option on passing plays.
The Bears need to reevaluate their TEs when doing the same to the O-linemen.
Which they HAVE to do.
Kellen Davis stinks!
Man stop crying about the past. Our Loine was great last nite they werent the problem it was the rain and the Bears lack of play calling on offense. Something gotta give between Marshall dropping passes and Cutler always throwing to him. Its fine to mix it up BUT CUTLER STOP THROWING TO HIM EVERY OTHER DOWN.Ok but the Oline was great be thankful and give them props for holding it down for us. Stop complaining about stuff from last year that we didnt do. BEARDOWN AND BE REAL FANS.
Sometimes I wonder if some of the people who comment here actually watch the games.
Why did the offensive line "do better" last night? Because the Texans rushed only 4 guys 90% of the time, got decent pressure, and waited for Cutler to have to force a throw because we were constantly in 2nd and long and 3rd and long because our crack OL couldn't get any semblance of a running game going.
Football 101: You build a football team with competent offensive and defensive lines
Our GM's apparently never took the Football 101 class, or maybe they dropped out after the defensive line part of the course. You could put a hall-of-fame QB back there, but if he is constantly getting sacked (which Cutler is), constantly having the pocket collapse (which ours does), the offensive linemen constantly falling down / getting turned around / getting knocked on their butts / blocking the wrong way (which is constantly happening with ours) - then you have NO CHANCE at creating even an average offense.
I knew, three years ago, that Cutler was going to get his head beat in and was NEVER going to get any help on the O line.
I see 2-5 the rest of the way (losses to SF, GB, Seattle, Minn, and either AZ or Lions) and Lovie signs a big, fat, 5 year extension after this season.
That's when it will get REALLY bad with Peppers, Uhrlacher, Tillman, Idonoje and Briggs all gone - and Cutler will either be retired, dead or will (smartly) refuse to sign an extension.
So we'll have no offense AND no defense and a series of 4-5 win seasons from 2014 to 2019 - what fun!
The Bear need to sign not only a veteran OL man but a backup QB with better then average experience. The Bears have a pretty good team and a great D and should have beaten Texans but it apears the play calling on offense was poor, and no real direction or running game. Get an extra TE in there to block. Where are the screens or the timing routes, with short quick passing?
Yuk!
The ' problem is not always the offensive line'. Cutler lives on the edge and has this propensity to hold on to the ball way too long. When Cutler had his bell rung against the lions and Suh, You would never see Brees, Rodgers or Brady hold that ball that long ! Cutler was expendable for a reason in Denver and now you see why? Also, Someone please tell coach Tice the 'simple 'high school play book'" has got to end here. Just about all of our runs "up the midlle" , no half-back options, no pitch-outs or roll outs. This play calling from a former head coach has no imagination. Our backs are talented but Tice has no imagination !
You need a quarterback..... Give this guy a closer look...
Vince Young has played this game all his life... He is a NCAA National Champion, a NFL Rookie of the Year, a Two-time Pro-Bowler and has taken an NFL team to the Playoffs...
Have you seen the backup quarterbacks out there???
Bring this guy in for a try-out a.s.a.p....
And then run like hell, because apparently as with sunday's hit, It doesn't matter if have released the ball or not, He is a target. That guy looked up at him after cutler released that ball and then dropped his head and speared him. He should of been suspended. Then he interviews and said that, Its always great when you can take out the other teams quarterback, its a great feeling. Animals like that need to go.
OH NO!! ANYBODY BUT MCCOWN, PUE ME IN!!
you ARE SOOO RIGHT! i had this conversation sunday. When all defense is gone we are screwed.
Whoever drafted Kellen Davis needs to be fired along with Kellen Davis. Why would you ever draft anybody out of the big ten conference? There teams stink along with there players.
Davis certainy smelled up the place Sunday night and cost the Bears big time on third down drops. Still, I'm willing to give him the right to have a bad game, and he certtainly has had his. Cold and rain no doubt contributed, but the same conditions prevailed for both teams. He is big enough to prove a real benefit to the Bears, but it is past time that he showed it. McCown is not a bad safety net. If Campbell gets injured after taking the injured Cutler's place, McCown could be a solid game manager replacement. Cutler still may start, which makes McCown pretty much of the odd man out, but his being available is not a bad move.
