Chris Conte separated shoulder; plans to be ready by season opener

Bears starting safety Chris Conte said that his shoulder socket popped out in Saturday's game against the Washington Redskins but that he expects to return in time for the regular season.

"It's not a big deal," Conte said. "I don't plan on missing any regular-season games, but the preseason was going well and you want to keep on getting better and playing in the preseason, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen."

Conte, though, made clear that Bears medical officials haven't given him an exact return date yet. He said that's the first time he's separated his shoulder.

Veteran Craig Steltz will start with Major Wright in Friday's preseason game against the New York Giants.

Hopefully Chris Conte doesn't miss any significant amount of time, he's the only free safety on a roster full of strong safety types. Conte isn't an all-pro yet, but is a very smart player who doesn't let much get behind him in coverage, again, the Bears need this. Conte seems to have himself in position to make a lot of plays, basically he's around the ball a lot, Conte is easily Chicago's best safety.

I like what I've been seeing from starting strong safety Major Wright this pre-season also, he seems to be getting better playing the ball. Craig Steltz adds nice depth and did a solid job filling in late last season making 37 tackles in the final 5 games, 3rd best on the team behind all-pro linebackers Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs, Chicago can win with Steltz and Wright, but would be a better defense with Conte defending the back half GO BEARS!!

Isn't Hardin a FS type being a former corner? Granted he is hurt as well but he is on the roster. With Urlacher having a major knee issue that will probably slow him all year, Steltz and Wright will not be enough to protect the middle and the deep zones. The Bears hide Wright in cover 1 by keeping him up on the line because he lacks coverage ability. Steltz is smart and a good backup but lacks the athletic abilty to cover the high level of nfl talent he will face.

Funny thing is given the defensive schemes the Bears run I would rather see Hardin at the FS spot and Conte and the SS spot. Now I read Hardin has to go back for tests in two weeks after all his tests for his neck came back clear. I am wondering if there was a second injury with him. As for Conte, I hate seperations, they tend to reoccur.
