Lovie Smith casts support for J'Marcus Webb and offensive line

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- In Lovie Smith's eyes, the Bears are fine standing pat on the offensive line.

"We like the group of offensive linemen we have right now, with what we're going to do with them, we think we can be very successful with them," Smith said. "With that said, you're always - right up until the opening week - if there's someone who can improve us we're going to look at it seriously."

Smith said, in essence, the Bears are getting two new players.

"Chris Williams in there. Gabe Carimi in there. I'm excited about getting them back into the mix," the Bears coach said of two players who missed most of the 2011 season.

The Bears addressed several key holes during free agency, adding a No. 1 receiver (Brandon Marshall), a No. 2 quarterback (Jason Campbell) and a No. 2 running back (Michael Bush). They also have re-signed a couple players and added a few other free agents.

But questions remain about the quality of the Bears offensive line. While he didn't close the door on possibly adding to the unit, Smith also insisted that he's comfortable with his current group. And he -- on several instances -- backed left tackle J'Marcus Webb.

First, Smith said Carimi's rehab is going well and that he will be ready for offseason activities. But when asked if Carimi will remain at right tackle, Smith said, "Good starting spot would be the right side, then we'll see how it all plays out, see who we end up getting.

"We feel comfortable with J'Marcus at left tackle. Gabe could probably play left tackle. But we have plenty of time for all of that. That'll work itself out."

Last season, though, Webb struggled mightily at left tackle. He had 15 penalties and, according to Pro Football Focus, allowed 12 sacks, the second-highest total among NFL tackles. In defending Webb, though, Smith suggested the young player -- a former seventh-round pick -- didn't get enough help.

That was what others around the league said was a key problem: Offensive coordinator Mike Martz counted on Webb to handle defensive ends alone far too often.

"I'd say any tackle can look bad at times. There are some things you have to do to help him out a little bit more, at times, which we plan to do," Smith said. "So you can make a case and throw out stats on what he did. But, I think it's hard for all tackles by themselves in the league to block Julius Peppers from time to time. We feel we've got a good plan at the left tackle position. I'll say that."

Asked if they could still bring someone in, Smith said, "We'll keep all options open right now.

"But, if we end up playing J'Marcus Webb at left tackle, we'd feel comfortable with that."

Meanwhile, Smith said Williams could play any position but center.

"Except for center, which he played a little bit in college, you could make a case for him at guard or tackle," Smith said. "Maybe a better case at guard, but you could say tackle, too.

"All those things will answer themselves a little bit later on."

My belief is, Williams could be given an opportunity to compete with Webb at left tackle. Between Lance Louis, Chris Spencer and Edwin Williams and a possible draft pick, the Bears should be able to do fine at guard. And Roberto Garza, who signed a contract extension late in the season, will return at center. Williams could be tossed into the guard mix, but he may be given a chance to push Webb at left tackle.

I look for Chris Williams to remain at left guard, and Lance Louis will line up at right guard, but Chris Spencer will also get a shot I think.. J'Marcus Webb will get the nod at left tackle, but Gabe Carimi could get a shot at the left side. If you remember last spring, Mike Tice said the Bears drafted a left tackle. he was talking about Carimi. I'd like to see Chicago swap Webb and Carimi around, I think Webb would be a better right tackle vs a left, Carimi is easily the best tackle on the team right now, he should get the nod at left tackle.

I look for Chicago to draft a tackle, at the very least they still need a swing tackle, the team only has 2 tackles right now, Webb and Carimi. I'd like to see the Bears draft California's Mitchell Schwartz, he's a great tackle prospect who's flying under the radar due to 2 other Pac-10 tackle prospects being possible 1st rounders. Schwartz is a talent and could come in and push Webb or at the very least be a swing tackle his rookie season, I say take him in the 2nd round GO BEARS!!

Webb didn't get enough help? Last time I saw him play he had two TE's doing his job for him. The Bears ran more 7-8 man protection schemes last year and Cutler did a great job of avoiding pressure and still it was raining defensive linmen. Webb got tons of help.

Basically what I am reading is that Webb was good enough but not good enough. That while he got more help than just about any tackle he didn;t get enough help. That he will start at LT if they don't draft or sign anyone better or move someone to LT. That Peppers apperantly played for the other team.

Whenever you talk about a player in a roundabout, beat around the bush way you got problems with that player.

I think if they didn't have so many holes on defense and didn't have so many age issues they would be looking at a LT. If Webb is a good LT than I am living in hell. Oh wait Taylor Swift is on tv, she has her own Xfinity commercial now, yep I am in hell.

ahhh....wow do i has to drop the hammer on couch lovey dovey or waht? wow hre lieks webb wells i say web is a SUPER LOOSER MEGA BUST!!! gaib creamy is a in jury (order in the court!) bust! garza? BUST!! Lasce Pouis? Donut evan get me started on tay looser bust!!

ps tayler swift is a girl.....blah! icky icky girls are gross ant my momma says they have kootees! :(

Just a little insight into the line. I have said for some time the line has it's issues and one issue I have repeated is that the run blocking has been bad, while many claim it was good. So lets take a look at that.

"The Bears' OL had the third highest percentage of runs stuffed at the line scrimmage last season and ranked No. 20 overall in converting short-yardage runs."

That's from espn, I have stated those things already, that is not based on people guessing those are the actual numbers. So can we drop the Bears lie that is their run blocking. It stank as well as pass blocking. I don't know why after all this time I have to argue about this O-Line the last O-Line or the next O-Line. But what else is new?

Oh Kevin likes a prospect he has never seen play before, that's nice.

Wait what happened to that Rutgers receiver you were in love with? I thought you wanted him in the second round. Oh wait did a draft blog tell you Schwartz was a sleeper pick. Well you don;t want to pass that up, someone you don;t know told you a player you never saw before is good. Start the fanboy crush, total beast city. This is the guy man Draft Dog said so and he has like 50 followers on twitter. Draft Dog never saw him either, in fact most of these clowns steal their stuff from Kiper, Mayock and Pro Football weekly, paraphrase and print it out.

But I know what your thinking how are we suppose to know if they are good unless someone else tells us they are good? Ahhh cheap validation. Cause it's not like we can go to Youtube and watch highlights of almost every player in the draft cause it's not like those players post their highlight footage and it's not like you can't see clips from just about every college game played every year on youtube either. God forbid fans actually use their own eyes. Oh and of course the 40 times, can't have a draft without 40 times.

You know when I was younger, pre kiper explosion, the only college players we talked about were the guys we saw play on local tv. Then you would argue over who was good and who sucked. Or if they were from a team you didn't like (Florida) you talked about how they sucked but didn't really suck if they switched teams.

Hey Crap-ton, I wanted Mohamed Sanu as a 1st rounder not a second rounder, why do I no longer want him you may ask? Because Chicago made the Brandon Marshall trade dummy! Chicago no longer needs to use a 1st rounder on a receiver.

Your a pretty smart guy Crap-ton, yeah, lets only talk about the guys we see on local TV?? I tell you what, I better not here you talk about another player you (the great Crap-ton) haven't personally scouted. Because we're not allowed to talk about guys we haven't personally scouted. Only guys we saw on local TV?

I got a thing called internet Crap-ton, I go to different draft sites and read about different propects, and STOP THE PRESS, pick who I think would be good for the Bears. Of course I haven't personally scouted every single player listed, I go by what I read. So don't get mad at me just because a house landed on your sister, I have a right to my own opinion, if you don't like hoe and where I get an opinion, go cry about it with your buddies on the Steelers blog. Oh yeah, how is Mendenhal doing lately lol? GO BEARS!!

It's hear not here, Kevin. And you want to use you're in place of the your. Lastly how should be in place of that hoe. Hmmm, all the misspellings and typos sure don't seem like you. Could your alter ego be rubbing off on you???

"Your a pretty smart guy Crap-ton, yeah, lets only talk about the guys we see on local TV??"

You really don't know how to read do you? You see this?

"You know when I was younger, pre kiper explosion, the only college players we talked about were the guys we saw play on local tv. Then you would argue over who was good and who sucked. Or if they were from a team you didn't like (Florida) you talked about how they sucked but didn't really suck if they switched teams."

That was me reminiscing and pointing out how things have changed. How did I pull off this writing magic. Well I intrduced that paragraph with this one.

"But I know what your thinking how are we suppose to know if they are good unless someone else tells us they are good? Ahhh cheap validation. Cause it's not like we can go to Youtube and watch highlights of almost every player in the draft cause it's not like those players post their highlight footage and it's not like you can't see clips from just about every college game played every year on youtube either. God forbid fans actually use their own eyes. Oh and of course the 40 times, can't have a draft without 40 times."

So wait am I talking about the internet, but you said this???

"I got a thing called internet Crap-ton, I go to different draft sites and read about different propects, and STOP THE PRESS, pick who I think would be good for the Bears. Of course I haven't personally scouted every single player listed, I go by what I read."

That's so strange cause I did talk about the internet, ahhh did the strange symbols confuse you? Those darn things they called letters. What I did point out and you once again clearly missed reading, I guess the tears blurred your vision again, is this. Maybe you shouldn't just read about the players from these sites. Maybe you should go watch them on you tube. You do admit that you only read about the players. How can you tell if a player is talented if you have never seen him play?

Because a stranger told you this? The same strangers that are wrwong at least 60-70 percent of the time. This is why you miss on so many players you like cause you don't see them play. Everyone goes around to these so called draft sites and assume all these idiots are experts. All I am suggesting for you and many others is to actually go look at them play. This is why your wrong about players so often, you don't even see them play and then you run around talking about how great they are, and you call me an dummy? Do you think reading about a Bears game is the same as going to one or watching one? Do you think watching Payton play is the same as reading about it? Are you kidding me?

You have never seen these guys play? You just read about them on a freaking draft site and decide if they are good or not. Is that a damn joke? Dude that is not even your own damn opinion on a player. Your using someone elses cause you can't figure out who like so you just take their word for it? But I am the idiot? I literally just called you on on the fact that you can't think for yourself and you basically said yes. Not only did I call you out but I actually pointed out what you were doing and you said yes, I don't watch the players I read about them on a draft site. Are you kidding me? You want to know how I knew what you were rdoing/ Because you cut and paste stuff like this,

"California's Mitchell Schwartz, he's a great tackle prospect who's flying under the radar due to 2 other Pac-10 tackle prospects being possible 1st rounders. Schwartz is a talent and could come in and push Webb or at the very least be a swing tackle his rookie season"

Marvin Jones wrote that you freakin plagiarist. Oh and it't the Pac-12 not the Pac-10 if your going to steal something try and at least get it right.

So basically, you stole what somebody else wrote, tried to pass it off as your own insight and thoughts, admited you don't actually watch the prospects but get your information on them from draft sites by just reading about them and then use those peoples opinions as your own. And then you have the nerve to say this "I have a right to my own opinion" yes you do, except it's not your damn opinion when you steal it from soneone else moron.

You can say whatever you want about me, but at least I am original, I have original thoughts, I have my opinions, my own insight, and I don't steal other peoples work, and I most definitely don't need someone to tell me what I like or don't like. You are pathetic, and do you think a lot of people have not noticed that you steal other peoples ideas? Why do you think Mike busts your chops about what you write all the time. That's all you do is steal other peoples thoughts, cause you can't think for yourself.

Oh and for the record, I baited you into this, just so I could expose you for a couple laughs. Have a nice day plagiarist "GO BEARS!!!" Oh look quote marks.

Man I feel like Good Will Hunting in that Bar scene.

You know what Kevin sense I am on a role, how about I just finish this off. That's a funny joke Kevin, "So don't get mad at me just because a house landed on your sister" but it was funnier the first time I read it on a T-Shirt. Oooops, your stealing T-shirt jokes now? Could you be anymore pathetic? Stealing Zazzles, you freakin loser, really? What are 12? That would explain so much. Here you want jokes, you can tell this one to your friends and say you invented it. Let's play a word association game. I'll say something and you tell me the first thing that pops into your head. Let's start. "Angelo". Okay lets do another one "Sit and spin." How about one more? "Plagiarism"

Stealin T-Shirt Jokes, that's so pathetic it's not even funny. What's even more pathetic is that it's a chick joke. You know who else liked that joke? This freak, words that speak to me posted by Diana. You know that saying "great minds think alike" Well this is not that.

Here you want a classic joke, try this one. If your going ot use someone elses material, use something a little better like this.

What's the first thing your mother does in the morning?
Introduce herself.
Walks home.

What is the difference between your sister and a toilet?
After you use a toilet it doesn't follow you around for three days.

What does your mom put behind her ears to make her more attractive?
Her ankles.

Classics.

A T-Shirt joke? Really? That was the best you could do? I bet you were so pround of stealing that joke too. What next you gonna say "see ya wouldn't wanna be ya"

Ripping off obscure football quotes and stealing jokes from T-Shirts. Anything else genius, please come at me again, I can go all day busting you up.

Duhh herr duh herr, me am Creightoon. Me am expert on EVERYTIHNG in the hole wide world! Me blog everything I know from the command center aka momma's basement. If you don't sgree with me I get angry and throw a tantrum like the man child I am!!

Me am CreighTOON, derrr duhhh derrr.

Me is expert, me also laugh hard when stupid Kevin makes mistakes and posts under him wrong name. Oooops poor Kevin keeps posting under the name Crap-ton. Hahahahaha, Kevin outs himself again, at least this time it's a lot less disappointing for his father.

What no reply Kevin? Didums have an accident? Or maybe your trying to google a comeback you can steal from soneone else. Here's a clue, "talk to the hand" has been done before.

Lets see, you got busted posting as Crap-ton again, got caught plagiarising again, admitted you don't actually watch college players but only read about them at draft sites, you believe stealing other peoples opinions is the same as having your own opinion, oh and got caught stealing quotes off little girls T-shirts you sick puppy.

Oh and Jeff it wasn't his alter ego, it was his anger. I know how to push someones buttons. Why do you think he created Crap-ton in the first place.

Ahhh man good times, good times, just like the old days around here.
