Report: Jeff Fisher has eyes for Bears

Bears president and CEO Ted Phillips emphasized Tuesday at a press conference that coach Lovie Smith's job is safe.

Any general manager hired to replace Jerry Angelo must keep Smith, signed through 2013, through at least the 2012 season.

But according to a story on NFL.com, former Bears safety Jeff Fisher -- one of the biggest free-agent coaches -- wants to return to Chicago.

Reportedly a candidate for the vacancies with the St. Louis Rams and Miami Dolphins, Fisher "will keep an eye on Halas Hall."

NFL Network reporter Albert Breer cited a source with knowledge of Fisher's thinking as saying of the Bears coaching job, "That's the one he's always wanted."

According to Breer, Fisher is fond of Bears quarterback Jay Cutler. Fisher's former offensive coordinator, Mike Heimerdinger, worked with Cutler in Denver in 2006 and 2007. Heimerdinger passed away in September.

Breer, though, points out that Fisher's likely landing spot is St. Louis. Fisher is represented by agent Marvin Demoff, whose son Kevin is the chief operating officer of the Rams.

Sean, you got a boatload of comments with your post on the Jerry Angelo firing. Are you trying to triple that amount of traffic with this post?

Getting rid of Lovie would really mean the Bears are serious about improving. And rather than holding Cutler, Forte and the defensive starts back like Lovie has been doing, I think Fisher would nicely complement this team and make it stronger.

Oh and Sean, since the Suntimes is requiring us to now pay to view this site, do you think it'd be too much to ask for to have 1.) Quicker updates with our comments to better keep the conversations between people going 2.) The return of that rectangular text box on the main page that would show what the latest comments were and 3.) Back and forth buttons on the stories so we don't have to click out of a blog post and go to the main page just to read the previous or next article?

I know you and Mark are busy and everything, and we fans always appreciate what you do, but bringing those things back would improve the blog imo.

you know it sure would be good to see a former bear prowling the line instead of stoned looking lovie..

if your going to sweep you need to sweep the whole floor and that means lovie should be have been " relieved: as well..

think the fans would love it!! hey look at jim harbough in san fran!!

"3.) Back and forth buttons on the stories so we don't have to click out of a blog post and go to the main page just to read the previous or next article?"

Mike, just get a browser (IE, Firefox, etc.) which uses tabs. Then you just have to go to the main page once, open up each blog item in a separate tab, then go from tab to tab. Arrow buttons would just take longer.

Ambiguity = bad management.

Unlike some on this forum, I think Lovie is a very good coach.

However, I am concerned that the Bears will have difficulty finding a GM that will be forced to work with Lovie. Additionally, Lovie has had problems with his assistants over the past few years - and I'm not sure he should have the "total control" he seems to have.

IMO the only viable candidate to replace Lovie is Fisher. If the Bears have interest in Fisher, they should pursue him aggresively.

Don't give me this Bill Cowher nonsense either. He had tons of talent in Pittsburgh, plus league referees that let the Steelers get away with murder on the field (figuratively of course).

Cowher is a good coach - absolutely. But he is no better than Lovie. His lone Superbowl versus Seattle was a total fraud.

Sean, Mike's suggestions shoud be taken seriously. Don't just "pass them on." Take charge for Chrissakes?

I'm not sure Fisher would get along with Lovie. I see Fisher as much more of a coach than a general manager, but he would also make a pretty solid offensive coordinater if he was interested. I'm loking forward to following how this all plays out.

Yeah it does take awhile to get a post up, sometimes it takes days, or they just don't get posted. Why not use the same system the score uses or the trib? It's an instant post. You could also limit the amount of text to like the trib does.

Anyway on to Fisher, well it will never happen, because the Bears at an organizational level are football retarded. I mean for crying out loud, Lovie basically gets to pick his GM and the GM has no power over Smith. They are giving him that much power and he has not earned it. Smith is currently out looking for an OC, are you kidding me? Why on earth would you let him pick the OC? If there is one thing we know it's that Lovie has no clue about offense, this is his 4th OC. The only reason a GM or an OC would come here is the same Reason Fisher would like the job. You got a young frnachise QB. I mean what OC woulld want to work for Smith? He has made a living throwing them under the bus.

Right now I want to know how much power Lovie has had, and currently does have in the draft? Cause right now it seems whoever gets the GM job is a GM in name only.

Jeff Fisher was a good coach in Tennessee -- yet for all that what did he accomplish that Lovie Smith hasn't done? Lovie has done a great job with the Bears -- I think in the NFC only the Packers and Giants have fared better during his tenure. To think Jeff Fisher will somehow be better than Lovie Smith is to ignore the facts of the two coaches records -- Smith 69-55 / 3-3 postseason -- Fisher 142-120 / 5-6 postseason

Lifeless LOvie looking stupified on the side lines --worst red flag thrower --This year he finally won a couple. Great thats all he does. No inspiration for players .. No accountability ..

Players guy --great -fire him and make him a player rep.

I cant stand watching this mope on the sidelines doing nothing .. Give me the Detroit coach or Gb coach anytime..

Fisher would be nice.

Another bad year next year with LOvie (his last).. who would want to GM with a leftover Lovie .. The Bears just dont want to pay him and another coach.. Its money believe me.

Now get rid of the bad receivers and get a big defensive back and a line backer to back up Urlacker

Thanks Sean, I appreciate it very much.

"Unlike some on this forum, I think Lovie is a very good coach." - estevenj

Excue me for a sec...YAAAAAAAAAAAAARGHHH!!!!!

Sorry, just needed to yell like a lunatic and rip every last hair out of my head. Ok, I'm good now.

Esteven, I got nothing against you. I think your posts are entertaining with a little humor thrown in and all, but dude, really?

Now obviously Lovie isn't completely incompetent otherwise we'd go 0-16 every year. But let me ask you a few questions if you don't mind.

Aren't you sick of seeing teams in the 4th quarter time and time again effortlessly drive down the field and score points because of Lovie's boneheaded prevent defense? I mean, I get physically sick when every defender (excluding d-linemen) is at least 20 yards away from the line of scrimmage. It's maddening.

Do you remember the 2010 Redskins game? Earl Bennett gets stopped at the one yard line, Lovie thought it was a TD and challenged. Who does that when you have 1st and goal from the 1??? Anyway the play stood. Next play Cutler sneaks in for a TD, refs miss that he crossed the line and Albert Haynesworth knocks the ball away for a fumble that WASH recovered. Replays show Cutler had the ball in the endzone. Lovie, either too sheepish or too stupid (or maybe both) refuses to challenge and have six go on the scoreboard. After the game he says something to the effect that he had a "gut feeling" to challenge where Bennett was tackled. My gut feeling was that he should have been fired right after that game. Head coaches just can't do those types of things.

And speaking of that incident, do you like seeing Lovie randomly throw pointless challenge flags that waste timeouts time and time again?

Did it bother you at all when during last season's Giants game Cutler was being turned into hamburger meat and Lovie said postgame that if not for the concussion, he would have left his franchise QB out there to continue taking a senseless beating?

Do you approve of the way Lovie has made some players lose/gain weight before changing his mind again on what they should do? Like Benson and Izzy for example? "Gain weight, no lose weight no wait, wait...gain weight! Uh, ok lose it."

Lastly, Creighton's alluded to this before, but as a head coach, does Lovie really seem concerned with the team as a whole? Or does he seem to be totally absorbed with his defense? Shouldn't the head coach look over the entire team and not just the part he likes?

Just a few points to ponder. I await your rebuttal, sir.

You know Lovie is like an enigma, sometimes I watch him and i am like nice job, and other times I am punching myself in the face to kill the pain. He has always been absorbed by his defense, and he has Toub who takes care of special teams, and they have won Lovie more than a few games. The players like hiim and play hard for him, but a lot of things coming out today suggest that Lovie has done a lot to create a his own little cess pool at Halas hall. Not really a fan of helping to divide an organization and cause a lot of infighting.

You know I agree he doesn't know where to play players very often, I know he has had his hands in a lot of the draft picks, his 4 deep prevent style cover two late in games is insane, clock managment is just bad, he bounces some players all over the place, he sticks with guys to long, he doesn't seem to know his own players very well benching Jennings for Bowman was insane, sticking with Hanie for 4 weeks was crazy, I have seen him out coached way to many times by coaches who don't wow you.

I think without Toub and special teams over the years, Lovie is probably a 500 coach. In 2010 the Bears played injury free and played teams just loaded with injuries it wasn't an amazing year in terms of talent or play.

When I think Lovie I think Good Rex bad Rex, you either get good Lovie or bad Lovie. But consistant, the Bears have been to the playoffs 3 times in 8 years and never had a good offense.

Good Lovie: The players like and usually play hard for him. He's consistent and steady. Usually puts good or at least decent defenses on the field. Has gotten a lot our of little talent in some years (I think we all agree that beside Cutler and Forte the Bears have nothing on offense).

Bad Lovie: Plays not to lose instead of to win. Plays prevent defense when the Bears aren't up enough to do so (you have to be up a lot with very little time remaining for this defense to "work"). Probably ruined Idonije with the gain weight to play tackle, oops sorry, you're playing end, then lose weight to play end, oops sorry, you're playing tackle. Often outcoached, especially in the 2d half. Does not make good adjustments. Seems to pay little attention to offense. Has games where the team seems unprepared.
