Podlesh will replace Maynard

In a story first reported by ESPN, the Bears have found a replacement for Brad Maynard after agreeing with Jacksonville Jaguars punter Adam Podlesh to a five-year contract.

Podlesh had a career year in 2011 and was named a Pro Bowl alternate after averaging 43.8 yards per punt.

"I'm extremely excited," Podlesh told the Florida-Times Union. "Obviously it's a very prestigious organization and they're obviously a high caliber team. Looking for a super bowl so I'm excited to be a part of that."

Podlesh was diagnosed with salivary gland cancer in March, 2010, underwent surgery and is now cancer free.

Nice pickup, Adam Podlesh should give the Bears a little more leg on punts. Podlesh a former 4th rounder out of Maryland has really come on in the last 2 seasons after a slow start to his career, in 2009 he dropped 26 punts inside the 20, and last season was a Pro-Bowl alternate. Podlesh along with kicker Robbie Gould should give the Bears one of the best kicker/punter duos in the NFL.

An area the Bears might miss Maynard will be as a holder, he's been Gould's holder the entire time he's been in Chicago. This is an area Podlesh will need reps to get in sync with long snapper Patrick Mannelly and Gould. This is also a good reason to sign an established punter vs going into camp with a group of untested guys. Now that Podlesh is the punter, $10 million worth, he can work on getting in sync as a holder, where if a bunch of guys were going for the job, there really wouldn't be a way for one player to get reps and there by get in sync as the holder GO BEARS!!

Sadly thus far this is the best off season move by the Bears. The league is going wild with signing and trades and the bears look like a old lady waiting for the bus. I love the Bears not the front office.
