The father of Bears defensive end Julius Peppers has been charged with felony cocaine possession, according to the Associated Press and various other news outlets.
The North Carolina Bureau of Investigation announced Thursday that George Thomas Kurney, 50, had been arrested following a joint state-local investigation. As a result of the arrest, Kurney has been fired from his job as a sherriff's deputy in Nash County, N.C., a position he had held for 10 years. Kurney was later released on $1,000 bond.
Kurney could not be reached for comment. Messages left for Peppers were not immediately returned.
