Two physicians say Jay Cutler "lucky" to only tear his MCL

The head
physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers said quarterback Jay Cutler should not have finished the game and insisted he was fortunate that he didn't endure a more serious knee injury.
"With a little bit more force, the next thing to go, in that situation, is the ACL," said Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the orthopedic surgeon at Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles and team doctor for Dodgers. "So anybody who has a Grade II or Grade III that doesn't have an ACL injury is lucky."
As first reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, Cutler's MRI Monday morning revealed that Cutler suffered a Grade II MCL tear in the second quarter of Sunday's NFC title game against the Green Bay Packers.
ElAttrache, who performed knee surgery on New England's Tom Brady in October 2008, also said that how Cutler and the Bears' medical team staff handled the situation is consistent with standard protocol.
"Initially, as soon as it happens, [the patient] may say, 'That feels unusual. Then keep playing,' " ElAttrache said. "But as the knee bleeds, it becomes more stiff and uncomfortable. So initially, you might find a guy who can play a couple of series. But then when he doesn't move around, his knee will stiffen up.
"Looking at it, as time went on, he became less mobile and more uncomfortable. If you feel you're not too mobile, you're not only putting yourself but your team at risk."
Dr. David Thorson, who works with the U.S. Ski team, added that trying to continue to play would have increased the chances of Cutler tearing his ACL, a knee ligament that requires upwards of six months of rehabilitation.
With the Grade II MCL tear, the usual healing time, which doesn't require surgery, is three to six weeks. Thorson added that Grade II MCL tears are the trickiest to diagnose. A Grade III is a complete tear, and a Grade I, he said, is just stretching, with a couple of fibers potentially tearing.
Grade II MCL tears are somewhere in the middle.
"The reality is, it's not black and white," he said. "How do you know if Grade I doesn't have a few fibers torn? You can't tell it, until you do an imaging study.
"There's a broad range in there."

Wow... you're comparing yourself to a QB that took 50 plus sacks... good job... Trent was a average QB at best with a dominating D same as Grossman

You actually believe Schlereth wrote that?

This is hilarious, I see Jay headed to title town and proving every single monkey brained morons wrong!!!!!!!! No one expected the Bears to go this far to begin with!

Well I believe Mark Schlereth really wrote that. By the way Bumsteaders, my Total Beast team is being put together as we speak! Look for it soon!

Bada bing, bada boom, bada Bumstead! Kevin Bumstead!

You know guys it just occured to me, do you know who Jay Culter reminds me of? Or at least the stories I read about him and the movie I saw about him. He reminds me of Roger Maris. He's not good with the fans, the media hates him, players around the league hate him. Evey team, every fan, and media outlet want's that Mickey Mantle type. Outgoing, life of the party, great quotes, fun to read about and follow.

Well that wasn't Maris and it's not Cutler, Both guys are reserved, neither ever showed much emotion, fans expected a different kind of player when they got to their respective teams. The media hated him, lots of fans hated him. Both are small town guys, and nobody ever really got either guy.

Lots of players hated Maris, everyone blamed him for everything that ever went wrong with the Yankees.

I can't think of a guy who reminds me more of Maris than Cutler. I am not saying they are twins or anything, but they have a lot of similar traits. You know when the Yankees got Maris everyone expected him to be as good as a young Mantle and to be the same kind of player and person. But he wasn't. Same thing with Cutler everyone thought he would be this different kind of personality and to instantly be as good as the all time greats. But he hasn't been.

It's funny cause people used to say Maris had no heart, and that he wasn't tough. Maris was one tough SOB and if you think Cutler isn't, then you don;t know what tough is. I am not taking about the game or the hits. I am talking about all the crap he keeps putting up with.

This whole fan crazed, media driven witch hunt reminds me of that. Not sayiing it is identical but it feels really familer.

Most people thought we were getting the next Elway aka Mantle, what we got was the next Maris. Sad thing is people think that's a bad thing.

In Denver Cutler was crucified before he ever met McDaniels. When he broke a couple of Elway's records fans went nuts. When they found out he was diabetic they wanted to lynch him.

Pompei wsa on him before he ever put a Bears uniform, Pompei used to civer the post and was all over him for not being Elway.

David Haugh dubbed him Jerk Face after one game with the Bears.

Both Maris and Cutler came from mid market teams, Cutler from Denver and Maris from KC. Maris went to NY and Cutler of course came to Chicago.

Neither city understood the personality of either player. Neither city tried to understand either player instead we wanted him to be someone he wasn't and blamed them for not being who we wanted them to be. And in the end NY was proven wrong about Maris. I think the same thing will happen in Chicago with Cutler.

He may not be what we expected or wanted, but that does not mean he can't be great being who he is. It doesn't mean he does not have work to do, all pro athletes have work to do. He may not be what you wanted, but that does not mean he can't be what we need a top of the line franchise QB with lots of talent.
