Jay Cutler has MCL tear, according to a source

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler was scheduled to undergo an MRI this morning to determine the extent of a torn MCL believed to be in his left knee, according to a source close to the situation.

Neither Cutler nor coach Lovie Smith explained when the injury occurred in the second quarter, but Cutler headed to the locker room for halftime ahead of his teammates, and he tested the stability of his knee in the opening series ot the third quarter. At that point, Smith said the team made the decision to remove him from the game.

"For us, Jay hurt his knee," Smith said. "He just couldn't go; team, doctors and all, there was no decision, really. He was injured."

An MCL tear is consistent with what Cutler noted after the game, that he was hit on the outside of his knee.

The medial collateral ligament is one of the four ligaments that stabilizes the knee joint. Depending on the severity, an athlete could miss anywhere from one to six weeks, or longer.

A Grade 1 tear, which is incomplete, usually just involves pain and one to two weeks of recovery.

In a Grade 3 tear, which is complete, an athlete could have significant pain and swelling and endure instability in that knee. Surgery is not necessarily required, but the knee needs to be immobilized with a brace and crutches might be needed. It could take six weeks to heal.

Well hopefully he's ok. I just wish that Hanie was ahead of Collins. The bottom line here is that our O is in desperate need of some aide. Sean or Neil, Quick question:

Do either of you guys think that the heads will make some adjustments to the offense? And if you think they will which positions do you believe they will research the most in fixing?

Thanks

Some players are just crybabies! I had Jim McMahon tell me about Willie Gault not wanting to play due a hangnail!

Cutler's real problem is the Bear's offensive line. No quarterback can function effectively without a line to protect him.

Now maybe some of those so called "fans" will get off of Cutlers back. I have read alll kinds of nonsense on the Bears website and most of it makes me sick. Now we just need to work on the o-line for some protection and work on those routes. And oh yeah, we need a good backup qb, I dont understand why Collins was ever signed or why he was in that game. I was proud of the way Hanie came in and took the Bears down the field. With a little more time, say the time Collins wasted , we might have gotten another score that we needed. After that first posession by the Packers the D played great! They held that offense to just 14 points! And dont forget the dismal predictions by all the so called experts about the Bears season. They all had the Bears at the bottom of the NFC north...........we won the division and was the number 2 seed. So I hope Cutler knows most Bear fans appreciate what he went through this season and are looking forward to the next..............because he is there. So hang in there Jay and we will see ya next season! and dont forget to..............BEARDOWN !!!!!!!

BTW, Jay get healthy for 2011-2012 season

Cutler has no excuse for not playing. IN the quest for a SUPER BOWL RING, Come on son!!! do you think the greats like ELWAY, MARINO, MONTANNA, AIKMAn, or YOUNG quit on their team? And not just thier team...thier city!! I am teaching my 7 yo son not to be a loser, not to quit, to play with all you have in you. Jay Cuttler chose to be a loser.

Yeah Cutler is week I showed him on twitter, leaving a game with a knee injury. They would have to drag me off the field to keep from playing. I played all year with a knee injury. If I was in a big game I would play. Even though my team was in a playoff chase and I skipped the last two games of the year because of a knee injury, I would have played injured if I had not been hurt.

Yeah back to twitter, I gotta cheer for my boy Big Ben, nothing like a rapist redeeming himself by playing football. Totally cleared his name by winning yesterday.

Are you kidding me. I hate Brett Favre but if he was our QB you would have to tie him up and drag him off the field. Cutler go back to Denver.

What's stupid is that if he had continued ot play with that injury he could have made it worse... you just can't risk your starter even for a championship game and something tells me that it's not Cutler's decision

Bottom line....Cutler (The Bears) should've sucked it up and had him out on the field playing like it was the last game of his life. Disappointing. Kudos to Hanie though.

I've seen some of the comments about Jay's toughness and he's as tough as anyone in the NFL. Jay has taken some shots during the season and continued in those games. He suffered a concussion in one game earlier in the season and had to sit out the rest of that game and the next game because of it. The league has rules about concussions and it's about protecting the players health. I was at the Chicago Bears site and according to my understanding, the Bears coaching staff and medical staff made the decision for Jay to come out of the playoff game with the Packers. I guess from what I've also read online, there were some cheap shots taken toward Jay by other NFL players as well as some fans who had no idea of what had happened. Anyone who claims they could of played with that type of injury is just talking without having to go through it. Some people don't realize that the coaches are involved with decisions on their players and when an injury is involved, removing a player from a game is for their protection. As someone also pointed out in a previous post here, there could have been further damage to his knee if he had continued to play. By the way, the Bears coaching staff and fellow Chicago Bears defend Jay about his toughness.

Another idiot rises. You don't get it do you. Y oucan't play with a grade 2 MCL tear, it's not about wanting toplay. It's about having the ability to play and he didn't have the ability to play. If he broke his right hand would expect him to grip the football?

Brady left a playoff game with a Sprained ankle, you say nothing. Cutler had a grade 2 tear, took a pain killer shot to his knee at the half, and tried to play. He couldn't play, his knee was loose. He can't plant he can't pivot. From the moment he took the hit, he stopped using his front leg, he stopped stepping into throws. If you can't plant you can't throw and a grade two tear will not let you plant your foot.

It does not matter what you want to do, if your body won't let you do it.

If it was all about heart, 50 year old players would be all over the league.
