Bears sign QB Gutierrez to future contract

| 1 Comment | No TrackBacks

The Bears signed quarterback Matt Gutierrez to a reserve/future contract Tuesday.

A former rookie free agent who signed with the Patriots out of Idaho State in 2007, Gutierrez spent time with the Bears in training camp before being released in favor of veteran Todd Collins.

He also spent time with the Chiefs.

I think the writings on the wall as far as what Chicago plans to do with Todd Collins, he's probably gone. I've always though Caleb Hanie was ready to become the backup anyways, next season Hanie will have a year in Martz's scheme, and theres no reason he shouldn't be the #2 behind Cutler. In the little meaningful action Hanie did see this season, vs the Giants and Panthers, he was 5 of 7 for 55 yards. I like the fact he completed 71.4% of his passes, and the way the guy moves around in the pocket to extend plays. Hanie has pretty well earned the #2 spot going into next season.

As far as Gutierrez, there must be something about the guy the coaching staff likes to bring him back for a second look. He does have nice size and a pretty good arm, but he is raw. Should be interesting as always GO BEARS!!
