Avril has career day against rookie Webb

| 2 Comments | No TrackBacks

Lions defensive end Cliff Avril had a career-high three sacks against the Bears while primarily matched up with rookie right tackle J'Marcus Webb.

"There are always a lot of factors involved with it," Bears coach Lovie Smith said. "But of course we don't want to give up that many [sacks], and we'll continue to get better along the offensive line. But you have to give Cliff his due also. He had a heck of a game. Those three sacks were big."
After the game, Webb said that he felt more comfortable as the game progressed.

"I felt like I got better and held my own and helped us get a much-needed win," he said.

I'm not too upset about Webb yet. When you hear retired O-linemen talk about their rookie year, they almost always describe how they got mauled. Webb's arrow is definately still pointing up. It remains to be seen where he levels off.

OK they are a lot better now, but..... The one I'm worried about is Omiyale. He is relatively young, but is a veteran who should be entering his prime. This may be about all we get from him and frankly it's servicable, but not enough. Chris Williams is improving at guard, but I wonder if this is a one year bandaid or they see him there long term? Kruetz is a lot more mobile than last year. He gets there, but doesn't seem to finish blocks very well any more. Next week will be interesting for him because Wilfork is a huge beast. Not a great matchup for the Bears.

As it stands right now the O-line has more answers than it did to start the season, but will probably still be an off-season priority.

I just worry about cutler he is tough and gutsy but it would. Be nice no sacks for one week
