NU's Wootton not moving too far away

Since he was slated as a first-round pick toward the end of the 2008 season, Northwestern defensive end Corey Wootton certainly has to be disappointed that he didn't go until the fourth round in this year's NFL Draft.

But Wootton thinks more about his future, and he's thrilled to be joining the Bears.

"Everything happens for a reason," he said. "I'm just excited for the opportunity."

Wootton didn't complain, and he didn't express any regret about rushing back from his major knee injury to play for the Wildcats last season. Even though he projected he played at 70 percent, Wootton was still a key part of the defense, particularly down the stretch.

"I feel like I'm 90 to 95 percent," he said. "Somewhere around there."

He was hopeful that he would be 100 percent by training camp. If that's the case, then the Bears potentially got a steal since he was expected -- even with his knee injury -- to go as high as the second round in this year's draft.

"I'm thrilled for Corey," said Wildcats head coach Pat Fitzgerald said. "We obviously have a close relationship with the Bears, and he is joining a terrific organization with some outstanding coaches. Corey's best football days are still ahead of him."

One person close to Wootton is thrilled.

"I would love it if he got drafted by the Chicago," Lori Hackman, Wootton's mother, told the Sun-Times in February. "We love Chicago."

Angelo special, knee injury, and neck injury.

Peppers
Izzy
Anderson
Gilbert
Melton
Wootton, a run stuffing end, smart nice instincts, great value. Will replace Izzy on special teams.

Wooton, may project down the road as a DT instead of DE since he is not that speedy with the outside pass rush. He has the body to add weight to achieve 300 lbs and has the motor and quickness that maybe he could project into the 3 technique. Maybe a left DE, since he would hold up well against the run.

Have to agree with Creighton that he will be special teams and who knows, after Tommie Harris wears down in a year or two maybe Wooton moves in and takes over his DT position.

Maybe a diamond in the rough?

Toney Washington, Gearhead Boy? Might be a sleeper....

He is a trouble maker off field though.

If Tommie Harris wears down? I think that process is well underway.

The Bears just picked Joshua Moore. Thats intresting, just what they needed a really bad prospect that had no value at all. F### the O-Line there old and lack talent what we need is a bad corner.

Good value pick. I'd give some odds he eventually winds up Meltoned on IR. Realistically in round 5 we are probably looking at a player in the mix for next year unless they catch lightning in a bottle.

A QB? They drafted a f###### QB in the 6th round while Eric Olsen was still on the board? Oh god, I just hate Angelo so much, its this kind of garbage that kills me. First Moore and then Dan LaFeveour. This guy wasn't even going to get drafted.

He is Simple Jack. Ba fa fa fa fa fa foot--ball...

He hates the O-Line, he hates it. Their is no other way to explain it. He's probably looking at Faneca going he is still in his prime and will be a great RT. Maybe I can pay him more money than anyone on the planet and get him to come here and retire.

Another DE with injury history... just great... Holy Dan friggin Bazuin people.. We needed OL help in the worst way. Totally ignored again. And to draft a QB with still decent OL help on the board????? WTF!!!!! You have a young Cutler and a up coming QB with Caleb Hanie...and you draft a QB? LG needs an upgrade.. you still need a C.. Garza has maybe a year left... This team preached that the OL and FS would be improved.. They take a project/tweener safety in Wright and ignore the OL. Just wow... wow!!>!>!?!?!? Hope you all like the shotgun.. because we wont be able to run and Cutler will need every second to get the ball off before he gets hammered. 35-50..300 yards 2 TD/4 Ints. Per game stat.... and we lose 38-31. How can football "professionals" be this dumb??? Last post... done with football period. Hawks on soon... center ice.. yes.. New Hawks jersey... ahhh yes. Not fair weathered..just done with year after year of dumb owners with the bears.. at least the hawks try.

Defensive end Corey Wooton is a classic Jerry Angelo type draft pick, has all the ability in the world, but has an injury past hanging over him i.e. Zack Bowman. Coming out of the 2008 season Wooton put up 10 sacks to go along with 16 tackles for loss and was seen as a potential 1st rounder. He then tore his ACL in the Alamao Bowl vs Missouri. Wooton came back this year and didn't do to bad putting up 4 sacks with 6 TFL, especially when you consider he was coming off the torn ACL and was only at around 70% health wise. If the guy comes back around 90%, he will prove to be a steal. Despite the injury Wooton did set a school record with 49 starts. He was 4th in his career at Northwestern with 38 tackles for loss, and 3rd in sacks with 18.5. And Wooton was athletic enough to have made 4 ints at 6-6 270lbs. I think he'll end up at left end, we'll see.

The pick that blew me out of the water was 6th rounder Dan LeFevour the QB out of Central Michigan, one of my favorite prospects. The kids raw, especially since he spent most of his time out of the shot gun in college. Lefevour doesn't have the strongest arm either. But Lefevour is a winner having led CMU to 4 straight bowl games. LevFevour passed for 12,905 yards, 102tds, with only 36 picks. He joined Vince Young as the only QB in NCAA history to ever put up 3000 yards passing to go along with 1000 yards rushing, in 2007 he had 3652 yards in the air to go along with 1122 rushing yards. He looked really good at the senior bowl also moving around making plays on the move. I thought he was the best QB in the game. He'll be one to watch in the upcoming seasons here in Chicago GO BEARS!!

well this year's BEARS draft is over, we will see how well the money spent on the scouting department works for this team. I like Wright at 75, he makes plays, and yes he did share time with a stud Freshman, Urban liked to call it his 3-headed safety starters, Wright can really help this year and should be on the field from mini-camp. Wooten brings the run stuffing end we need to replace Ogunleye, and should make the roster. Not sure about the DB from K-state had not heard much of him. Tice got his man in the 7th round with the Richmond Webb nephew, this kid started out at TEXAS so he may be our future "Big cat" for 10 years at RT, LeFebrve, will compete with Basenez for the 3rd QB spot....Now let's see what FA O-Lineman are out there to bring in...will Fanenca cost too musch I heard the Jets are letting him go with money still to pay him on the deal...let's get the cap man going on this one!
