Source: Center Raiola expected to be signed to practice squad

Teams are not permitted to begin forming eight-man practice squads until 11 a.m., but there are a few candidates among the Bears' cuts that could return.

A league souce said that center Donivan Raiola will likley be signed to the practice squad. The Bears signed him in August, and with eight linemen on the 53-man roster they are expected to sign at least two to the practice squad if not three. The Bears carried nine linemen for most of last season, and they had two on the practice squad. Defensive end Ervin Baldwin is also expected to re-join the practice squad provided he clears waivers. Quarterback Brett Basanez is a definite possibility because he knows the system, and he performed well in the preseason victory Thursday night over Cleveland.

Here are the cuts from Saturday that are eligible for the prcatice squad. You will notice that wide receiver Brandon Rideau is not on the list.

G Johan Asiata
DE Ervin Baldwin
OT Cody Balogh
QB Brett Basanez
CB Rudy Burgess
DE Joe Clermond
FB Jason Davis
LB Marcus Freeman
LB Kevin Malast
WR Eric Peterman
C Donovan Raiola

If we were to build our PS solely from our own players, here would be my choices:

Asiata
Balogh
Malast
Freeman
Basanez
Peterman
Raiola
Ta'ufo'ou

We should give Freeman a chance to develop for a year, and Malast could develop into a versatile backup for middle and strong side LB.

If Olin gets hurt this season, or decides to hang it up after this year, we will need a center who knows the system to help out Beekman or push him for playing time.

Ta'ufo'ou has a lot more upside than Davis at FB, and we need one in case McKie gets hurt.

For lack of better options, Balogh and Asiata are the best options we have for OL on the PS.

Basanex performed better as the preseason went on, so he deserves a shot to stick around, and Peterman is the only WR we can add to the PS, unless we bring Kinder back in. I don't see the need for DBs or DL on the practice squad, since we kept too many of them on the active roster....

DE Ervin Baldwin
OT Cody Balogh
QB Brett Basanez
LB Marcus Freeman
LB Kevin Malast
C Donovan Raiola
FB Will Ta'ufo'ou
CB Woodny Turenne

I don't see the need in putting a WR on the practice squad. No one is going to sign Rideau, and since he can't be put on a practice squad he'll likely be available at a moment's notice in the Bears need a WR. And I don't think that J. Davis expects to be picked up considering what he said just after being cut.

Hey Brad, any chance a veteran WR and a FS could be picked up by the Bears after all the cuts are made?

Nick, you got it right ! With all Jerry Angelo's talk about a player's ceiling, I expected an end to the Jason McKie expirement. Will Ta'ufo'ou looks to have a MUCH higher ceiling. Younger, stronger, better hands. Also hope that Turenne makes it to the PS, 6 games into the season we can dump McBride and bring him in .

Brad,

What do you think the odds are of the Bears signing Dominic Rhodes as a back-up to Forte noe that Jones is injured?

Brad-

Any chance the Bears would pick up Ruvell Martin? At 6'4" and actual real game experience, he's probably better than several of the current receivers.

So the Pats trade Seymour and David Thomas for 2011 draft picks. Now there is no reason to question their personnel moves after years of success, but that seems like a poor value for the players they moved.

Looks likw slim pickings on the waiver wire, so we probably aren't going to find much help. McCauley is about the only one I have seen that would fit our system and be able to contribute.

Practice squad list is up on the Bears site. I still think we need to find a high quality back RB to help out Forte. And I still scour the wire for maybe another DT. My gut tells me that Tommie will be on the shelf by November. You can tell that knee is not 100%. The WR spot is fine. Bennett will have a solid year as will Aromashodu. Hester will get a few long TD's, but Bennett and Aromashodu will be the keys. Plus I think we have the best 1-2 combo of TE's in the league. TE's are hard to cover.. Cutler will shred teams up in the middle zones with those 2. O will be fine. Its the D that has me concerned.

DE Ervin Baldwin
OT Cody Balogh
QB Brett Basanez
C Donovan Raiola
FB Will Ta'ufo'ou
CB Woodny Turenne

The 8th doesn't matter, & 7th spot for that matter, I'd leave a spot or two open so we can pick up any attractive cuts like David Tyree or someone like that. We'll need to send someone from the 53 man down to the PS to cover picking up somebody. The 7 above looked good in camp and preseason especially Woodny Turenne and Ervin Baldwin.

Marcus Freeman is a bust yet an especially talented NCAA player. That is how it goes. He'll possibly turn into a contributor somewhere but we have enough depth at the position. Nick Roach and Jamar Williams, when healthy could start for any team in the division. In that vein, I am surprised that Hunter Hillenmeyer made the team. He seemed like the odd man out.

Joe Felicelli, Al Davis = Football stupid. I think Seymour is a great player but he is begining the down part of his career, he will probbaly give the Raiders 1 year and after that his contract is up. Watch him end up back with the Pats. Not to mention that 2011 pick is a first rounder. Given it belongs to the Raiders I will say that it will be a top 5 pick. We should trade Manning to the Raiders along with Hester and Vasher, we could end up with all thier 2010 draft picks. My god trade Harris and Davis will probably just give you anythig you want. I bet we could get a first rounder for Gilbert next year. Davis loves speed and ahtletic talent more than he loves football players, he also loves big names.

Poor Seymour he is a class guy and he is being put on the Raiders. I think Bill has plan, and Seymour is playing the good soilder for a year. I excpect to hear these words out of Seymours mouth during the first game, "My ankle, my ankle, I think I am out for the season."

Don't think they are leaving open a spot to drop someone from the active roster.

They don't have anyone who, if they chose to do so, would be safe from getting signed elsewhere. Maybe Toeaina, but they won't cut him because he's needed. And I don't even know if he has eligibility remaining.

That spot is for a RB. The team failed to bring any in during the offseason as rookies, but I bet they are working the phones to convince one that their have a better opportunity for a practice squad player.

So you noticed that Joe? Yeah, I was wondering why Da didn't go that route especially now when players can be got cheap. Makes you wonder it does.
