Bears to bring in Wisconsin's long snapper Dave Peck for tryout

The Bears will bring in Wisconsin long snapper Dave Peck on a tryout basis this weekend for the rookie minicamp, a league source texted us this morning.

Peck was the long snapper for the Badgers for three seasons. Here's a Q&A he did last fall.

Peck is going to have an uphill battle to get to training camp. With the reduction of training camp rosters, the Bears have not considered bringing a backup for Pat Mannelly to camp. But a good showing by Peck could keep his name near the top of an emergency list.

Rookie minicamp will run Friday through Sunday at Halas Hall.

I still think that we will be in the market for a long snapper after Mannelly's contract is up in 2010. He can't play forever, and he may not want to. We will have to keep our eye on guys who are out there. The Pats drafted a long snapper on Sunday to replace an aging guy who left for Denver. Teams know the value of a good long-snapper, and the pain felt when you don't have one.

The only chance we have right now of having a backup on the roster is if they are a position player for another spot, and can do this in a pinch. If I remember correctly, I think the last guys we had who were supposed to be good at it were Dustin Lyman and Joe Odom.
