A look back at the Bears' QB carousel (motion sickness warning)

| 2 Comments | No TrackBacks

Round and round.

The Bears quarterback carousel started spinning before Jerry Angelo came on the scene prior to the 2001 season.

But until Thursday's blockbuster trade for Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler, Angelo was destined to have the following words written on hios tombstone one day: Could never find a quarterback. Now, that space has been cleared. Perhaps one day it will read: Finally found Bears a QB.

When Cutler starts the season opener Sept. 13 at Lambeau Field, it will mark the 36th change in starting quarterbacks for the Bears over a span of 156 regular-season games. If you don't have your calculator handy, that's one change every 4.3 games.

The plan is for Cutler to stabilize the position. After all, that is what Angelo said he was fixated on just two days after the season ended. Here's a trip down memory lane for you and how the Bears managed to swap them out with Angelo personally overseeing 11 different starters:

Cade McNown
Shane Matthews

The best part of the whole thing? Cutler makes his Bears debut at Lambeau on national TV. The NFL couldn't have asked for a better turn of events for ratings.

After watching Favre line up week after week for what seemed like forever, and to continually hear the talk every time we played them about how many QBs have run through Chicago since he made his first start, and we finally have a guy in town who has the arm, the mentality, and the attitude to at least give us an "oh yeah, well we got Cutler" response. As a Bear fan living in Cheese land, I can't stop grinning. My face hurts....

I don't really remember any Bears QB's until I was about 6 or 7 and the QB was none other than Bobby Douglass (1971-72 time frame...). With all due respect to how they were off the field, the QB's they've had for the last nearly 40 years has been PATHETIC at best!!! I mean, the last 10 have been ridiculous with names like Burris, Quinn and Krenzel among the woeful lot! (I can just imagine the scene on Jeopardy: "...Alex, I'd like 'Obscure Never-Again-To-Be-Seen-In-The-NFL QB's' for $10,000...") But by getting Cutler "Bears Nation" (did I really write THAT?) is revved up!
With all due respect, this kid might just be the best Bears QB, ever! He should be better than all, maybe except for Sid Luckman. And that will change once the Bears win 4 (or more, wishful thinking) Titles - like Sid! And forget about Jimmy Mac! He was fortunate to have an awesome team to play with in '85! After SB XX Mac never won another playoff game! Mac was good. This kid, Cutler, could be outright "awe-inspiring" IF he is as good as we hope!
Jerry & Lovie, you have "filled up the tank" for optimism - both towards the team and towards you two! Good luck this season to you both and hopefully the Bears are NFL Champions for 2009 and long beyond that!!!
