Meet the press part II: Angelo wants Marinelli on board & more

| 14 Comments | No TrackBacks

We'll have details from the Jerry Angelo press conference soon but here are some of the highlights:

*** Angelo didn't beat around the bush at all, he would like ex-Lions coach Rod Marinelli to join the coaching staff.

*** He is upset with some players, who he didn't name, for a lack of performance this season.

*** He desires to get competition for Kyle Orton at the quarterback position. While he has confidence in Orton, he's not sold yet and that makes it sound like there will be no extension for Orton this offseason.

*** While not using his name directly, Angelo didn't seem to be happy with the work of defensive coordinator Bob Babich.

It's about time Angelo acts like a GM. Half the time it seems as if Lovie has more control than Angelo when it comes to this Bears team. Angelo needs to go after a free agent qb as well as a wr such as Houshmanzadeh. There needs to be outright competition at every position. Nobody on this team has earned job security except for Briggs and Forte.

maybe Angelo should look in the mirror. he's the one that put this team together. both he and the coaching staff need to go.

Until the ownership makes a real commitment to BEARS FOOTBALL and to its great fans, expect more of the same. GSH must be rolling over in his grave.

Jerry needs to get rid of Ron turner as well as Babich, and thank god I hope and pray to god Orton doesnt get an extension and loses the starting Qb position come next season. That Fruit cake Neckbeard was horrible and to be honest as a bears fan I got fed up watching this team play. It was the worst feeling I ever had rooting for a team that was soo boring to watch all season long as Orton as our Qb. Worst QB I ever watched play for the bears. REx was more enjoyable to watch having you on the edge of your seat waiting for that moment if he will not throw an INT, or watch his bombs over soldierfied. Those were the good days. If Orton plays next season I'm changing my allegiance to another team where Grossman will go. Enough is Enough!

It sounds to me like Jerry Angelo wants to bring in Rod Marinelli to be the Bears defensive coordinator, I had a feeling Chicago would go after Marinelli during the season, we all had a feeling Marinelli was going to be on the street. I know the 0-16 record doesn't look good on Marinelli's part, but you can't really blame the guy for what he had to work with, I think in Chicago, Marinelli will have a hell of a lot more to work with as far as running the cover-2 vs what he had in Detroit. I think it would be a good move to bring in Marinelli, Marinelli knows the cover-2, and as a former d-line coach, in the cover-2, he couldn't hurt our current d-linemen either. I thought Bob Babich could do the job early in the season, I was wrong, I think Babich was in over his head, I say bring in Marinelli, I think the right coach could turn our defense around, Marinelli might be that coach.

As far as competition for Orton, you knew the Bears had to bring in a backup QB, with Grossman headed out of town. If Angelo wants to bring in competition, so be it, but I still like Kyle Orton, the bum ankle really killed his game, before the ankle injury Orton was putting up around 250 passing yds a game, even one 300 yarder, you don't get 250 passing yds a game by dinking and dunking it, he was putting the ball down field, its no coincidence Ortons numbers went down after the injury, I still like him as the Bears QB. I give Orton credit for even playing, I read that it would take Orton all week to get the ankle feeling better, then by sunday it was good, but then during a game he would tweak it again, at least the guy tried to play through the pain. If Chicago would have had a better receiving core, Orton might have looked a little better with the injury also, it would have helped.
As far as potential free agent QB's, my guess would be Matt Cassel of New England or maybe J.P.Losman of Buffalo, just a couple guesses, I'd go after Cassel myself, we'll just have to wait and see GO BEARS!!

First off let me say that Jeremy you are wrong about Jerry needing to look in the mirror about this team, who's the one that built the majority of these guys to take us to a Super Bowl just a short 2 years ago? I didn't hear you saying that then. Jerry is NOT the problem. Matt I do agree that Jerry will add either Houshmanzadah or Boldin to aquire a true #1 receiver. I feel the most important free agent area to be addressed would be in acquiring Albert Haynesworth. This would finally allow us to be able to stop the run without 8 or 9 in the box, and would instantly upgrade the pass rush with him and Tommie paired together, while leaving other's lives much easier, like Mr. Urlacher. This would also help the pass protection as well since we would have more people dropped into the secondary. If we did these 2 free agent moves along with bringing in a veteran QB for insurance with Kyle, it would allow us to focus on the draft and upgrading at safety, offensive line and a nice speed complement back to Matt Forte. Besides this I would love the addition of Rod Marinelli, he would add passion as well as expertience of truly teaching the defensive line. GO BEARS!!!

Nothing will improve as long as Lovie is leading the team.. Why blame Babich, he was just doing what Lovie instructed him to do. Angelo has provided good players for Lovie to work with, but Lovie is either incompetent or because he got his big contract , he just doesn't care.

Bill you are so wrong about that Super Bowl team. The Best player on the team that year was B Lach and Jerry didn't draft him, after that it was Brown and look at the dip the defense takes whenever he is out. Again Angelo didn't draft him. Thomas Jones was the main cog of the offense and Angelo did not draft him either. The entire offensive line was not drafted by him that year. You know who he did draft? Rex Grossman. He is no longer on this team. Angelo will sign some stop gap players but drafting talent for him is rare and far between.

Bye the way everyone should read the entire interview, he actually states he and the Bears could right a book on how not to draft a QB. Glad he admits it. Bun then he goes to show how stupid he is when he says Lines don't win you games, RB don't win you games and Recievers don't win you games, but QB's win you games. What an idiot if he thinks a QB behind a bad line with a bad WR group and no RB is going to win you a Super Bowl the guy smoking crack.

Time for everyone to get worried Angelo loves the mid first round QB pick. Hello Tim Tebow oh man and he is a Gator, Angelo loves Gators. He will be a Bear, I am calling it now, Tim Tebow will be drafted by the Bears, then he will go after defense and hope the oline holds up and maybe sign Bobby Engram as a reciever. I am almost sure he feels Hester will be there number 1 reciever next year.

Bill, we are all Bears fans here but I disagree about JA bringing in Free Agents, The players you are mentioning would be perfect, I am crossing my fingers, yes we need them but he (the Bears) historically never brought in Free agents of that caliber, it would be an awsome thing to see in my lifetime, as the last time they did we went to the Super Bowl with the Free Agent OLinemen they brought in, here's hoping though! I agree we need FA more than ever with all of our needs. I am going to study up on Rod as I admit I know very little about his D experience but JA is sure talking him up for some team to grab.

Detroit is not Marinellis fault. Its Millens fault. Marinelli was given nothing in terms of talent by his dumb former GM. I for one woudl love to see Marinelli calling our defensive signals next year and boot that idiot Babich out of town. I hated that Lovie railroaded Rivera out of town, but now he has a chance to make up for his mistake. And yes, Bears need to throw house at Boldin or Housh at WR. Forget Haynesworth, the guy is going to re-sign with Tenn. We need a stellar draft by Angelo and we also need to let loose Booker, lloyd, and Davis.. yuck!

draft in this order: offensive lineman, defensive line/end, qb

go out in free agency and pick up legit #1 wr and also sign another wr, look for fs.

Bill maybe you didn't read what Angelo just said but, I will repeat it for you, a reciever is not going to win you games. He never has and he never will put much stock in recievers. We would all love those guys to come to Chicago but Boldin will be a trade and Angelo will not give more than a third rounder for him, and TJ will cost to much. Bobby Engram, get used to that name. The Bears were desperate for a reciever last year and look what was brought in. We were desperate for a saftie and we got Steltz, Angelo is not good enough to build a team through the draft and his record shows it. Not to mention we all want these big name free agents but how much money do the Bears have to spend, most of it is tied up in bad contracts on the defense, contracts your boy Angelo signed. So were does this money come from. The Bears have most of there guys signed and are not loosing a whole lot this year. Grossman, Brown, St. Clair, Lloyd, and Booker are there biggest names. All 5 have small contracts ending. Boldin, TJ and Peppers would be nice but the Bears don't have the cap space for any of them. Not to mention Rod M is gonna cost you more than Bobby B and if they go ahead and bring in Martz as well. Forget free agents he almost never goes after a big name and a big name on offense at a position he himself has stated he does not feel is important. No chance. QB and Defense are his priorities. My thoughts are he will look at Tim Tebow in round one or two or Garcia. But is sounds like he does not think Orton is the man and he is right, they guy is average, a good backup, but he is not your franchise. If he gets a stud QB in here then he will look at a stud reciever but again he stated that He and the Bears no more about what not to do to draft a good qb than what to do.
