Injured Petitgout a possibility at tackle?

| 4 Comments | No TrackBacks

SEATTLE--If the Bears are looking for an offensive tackle--and shouldn't they be--Luke Petitgout represents an interesting possibility.

The problem is it's questionable whether or not he could help them now and the Bears need depth with only seventh-round pick Kirk Barton and undrafted rookie free agent Cody Balogh are behind John Tait and John St. Clair right now.

Petitgout was cut loose by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after he failed a physical. The Bucs used the roster spot to sign ex-Bears fullback J.D. Runnels.

Petitgout suffered a torn ACL in his right knee in Week 4 last season and had been on the physically unable to perform list. He reportedly is some ways from being ready to return. The Bucs had signed the veteran out of Notre Dame to a $15.5 million, three-year contract last season.

The ex-New York Giant was dominated by Alex Brown in past meetings. Of course, the Bears have already reached out to Fred Miller and could bring him in without having to teach him the playbook.

And they shouldn't be? You're kidding, right?

The tackle play wasn't the most glaring weakness on the line @ Seattle, the inability for the guards and center to switch off and pickup blitzes and stunts was the big problem. And , Matt Forte was run over a couple times as well.

It's worth it to at least bring a veteran OT like Luke Pettigout in for a look, they signed Kevin Jones and he plays a more mobile and difficult position that Pettigout.

Also, Let's hope Earl Bennett can contribute on special teams as a returner becasue it appears he has the 'Lew Barnes/Dez White/Mushin Muhammad' disease, da' drop-zies.

And, forget Chris Simms from Tampa Bay, 'the left-handed Brian Griese' (the similarities between both QBs are extremely evident especially being 'prima donnas), continue to go with Caleb Hanie as the #3. The better pickup from Tampa Bay would Pettigout.

Tampa Bay just switched players on their rosters recovering from knee injuries by signing former Bears FB J. D. Runnels and cutting Pettigout. TB must be loaded with offensive lineman if they can afford to cut a veteran like Pettigout.

Has Ruben Brown retired?

We need to take a look at LeCharles Bentley as well. We should just bring him in for a work out and see if the guy has anything left.
