Dollars and sense: The Urlacher extension

| 14 Comments | No TrackBacks

The new deal for Brian Urlacher, an $18 million, one-year extension, puts him in position to earn $40.6 million over the next five seasons.

Here is how the money breaks down:

New deal

$6 million signing bonus

2008 base pay $3.95 million plus $1 million from new deal
2009 base pay $4.95 million plus $1 million from new deal
2010 base pay $6.15 million plus $1 million from new deal
2011 base pay $7.35 million plus $1 million from new deal

New year

2012 base pay $7.5 million

Urlacher has workout bonuses worth $50,000 in 2008-2011 and there is a $500,000 workout bonus in 2012.

Consider now the Bears have extended Urlacher, Tommie Harris and Alex Brown on defense while also re-signing Lance Briggs. Typical Bears offseason, right? Defense, defense, defense.

Well, name one person on our offense besides Hester who's worth re-signing or giving a big-bucks extension?

did you guys read what ole mariotti wrote? what a putz. the guy is always writing stuff about the bears thats not good. yo, mariotti, if youre so against the bears move to green bay will. i for 1 am tired of your negativity, moron!!!

brad- we also extended Dez clark, gave qb's grossman and orton extensions, resigned rashied davis and robbie gould and picked up on "O" -kevin jones, brandon llyod and booker

seems we also worked on the "O" to be fair

Great news here, unless you Jay Mariotti. Only in the media could a no talent hack get published and think it's your privelige to read him. He writes that Urlacher basically could not hold Butkus and Singletary's jock, this coming from a columnist who by comparison makes Orton the second coming of Farve. I wonder why he doesn't talk to a moron like you. Keep hiding behind that column Jay because I'm sure there is a MLB in a DE's body with the speed of a Safety out there who would love to talk with you about the finer points of hitting and tackling. Someone who will have his jersey retired on the Bear MLB Mount Rushmore. 51-50-54. Get over yourself.

I COULD ALMOST STOMACH THIS WEBSITE FOR A COUPLE WEEKS. WAS GAY MARIOTTI ON VACATION? SINCE YOU CAN'T WRITE TO HIM DIRECTLY AND TELL HIM WHAT A TALENT-CHALLENGED, PUKE, POOR-EXCUSE-FOR-A-WRITER HE IS (HIS EMAIL LINK GOES TO A GENERAL ADDRESS) I GUESS YOU HAVE TO SPOUT OFF HERE.

HE'S A WHINY, SQUINTY LITTLE TWEAKER WHO OBVIOUSLY GOT LEFT OFF THE SANDLOT TEAMS AND WAS RELINQUISHED TO RUNNING HOME CRYING WITH URINE RUNNING DOWN ONE LEG.

I'D LOVE TO SEE HIM ENTER A LOCKER ROOM AND HAVE TO FACE SOME OF THE PITUITARY CASES HE'S CHASTISED OVER THE YEARS.

SPEAKING OF FACES, GAY MARIOTTI DOES HAVE THE FACE FOR RADIO.

I COULD GO ON ABOUT WHAT A SLUNT HE IS, BUT I THINK YOU GET MY DRIFT.

More on Mariotti...
Mariotti just loves hating on Chicago sports. He talked about how horrible Urlacker is yet he had 123 tackles, 5 sacks and 5 interceptions all while he played through his neck and back pain. Sounds like a solid season to me. Urlacker is right when he said this is the same thing as organizations asking players to take less money. If the Bears can ask a player to take less or cut them why can't players ask for more money. Why can't the NFL just recognize their contract no matter what and maybe they won't have these problems. He's the face of the Bears, I'm glad he got paid.

Woody Paige for PRESIDENT!!!

Great news for Bears and Urlacher. He gets his money and now the Bears have him under control for the remainder of his "productive" years.

At first glance, I didn't think there would be any chance that he would see the final two years of his contract w/o a restructering of the money, but now that I think about it, considering how quickly NFL payrolls are increasing player salaries, that 7.5 million base salary may look like a steal in 2012, especially if his body holds up. If not, see ya 'Lach and thanks for the memories.

What Mariotti doesn't get is that the regular fan could care a less about how Urlacher treats the media. He thinks that since Urlacher wouldn't talk to the media that somehow tarnishes his legacy with Bears fans. Newsflash...we don't care who Urlacher or any other Bear for that matter decides to speak with. Only the media cares about this stuff. So for future reference Mariotti, please don't lump us Bear fans in with you guys in the media who are acting a lot more everyday like the "overpaid, selfish, and egotistical" athletes that you like to write about and villify. For me, I'll be concerned with what happens Week 1 when things really count.

And I do believe Angelo said the emphasis of the off season would be offense. The truth has been the emphasis was on keeping their own, and most of the players worth keeping around play D. Otherwise, we got some cheap scraps discarded from other people's rosters, some of whom might just be bargains but hardly qualify as solutions to our offensive woes(Lloyd, Jones, and Booker) The draft started out with offense, but in typical Angelo style, DT Harrison, Saftey Steltz, and CB Bowman may outlast those first three picks. Not addressing the O-line more agressively will be the downfall of the season.

Mariotti ,Clown Fool who loves to hate on his own town. What an Idiot

I agree on you guys about Mariotti (guy even wrote--twice--that, prior to the Patriots, the Dolphins had the only undefeated season in NFL history--how can a Chicago sports writer NOT know the Bears were the only team to do it 3x!).

So, I encourage you to do what I do now....just don't read his column! If people read the Suntimes just to get mad at Mariotti, this still sells papers! The only way to get rid of this Yutz is to ignore him...if enough people do--and let it be known to the Suntimes management--maybe, eventually, he will go away....

It is obvious that Moron Mariotti does not know a Hall of FAme Linebacker when he sees one. Butkus, Singletary and Urlacher are some of the latest great Chicago Bears Linebackers. Why is Mariotti so negative, did someone kick his dog or something?

WOW!!! i really wasnt expecting all those comments about mariotti when i started it. im glad to see im not the only one who thinks this guy isnt right for the city of chicago! as for urlacher, good for you, im glad you got your money. if it wasnt for BU our defense would be crap i think.

You know, usually I'm down on Mariotti, but his article wasn't necessarily bashing Urlacher. He was simply saying that Urlacher should act more like the great leader the Bears know he can be. He's by far one of the best linebackers in the NFL, but he'd be the complete package if he had a cleaner (I know, he's not that bad) off-field image and had a better relationship with the media. He's the face of the franchise for Pete's sake. We want to see Urlacher laughing, smiling, telling reporters how the team will dominate year in, year out etc.

Look at Tommie Harris.
