Bears make coaching staff addition: UPDATED

Northwestern defensive line coach Eric Washington will be hired to the Bears coaching staff.

It's not known exactly what role Washington will hold yet, but Lovie Smith has decided to add an assistant defensive line position to the staff, and interviewed candidates for the position this week.

Washington had a coaching internship with the team during the 2005 training camp. He has worked with linebackers in the past, and that position is vacant after Hardy Nickerson resigned earlier in the week for family reasons.

Lloyd Lee, an assistant for the last four seasons, is believed to be a candidate to replace Nickerson. Lee worked with nickel backs primarily this last season, but handled duties under Bob Babich with the linebackers in 2006. Lee turned down an opportunity to interview in Buffalo to be the linebackers coach there two years ago.

Lee had an in there with Perry Fewell, who had left the Bears to run the Bills defense for Dick Jauron.

UPDATE 7:32 P.M.: A team source confirmed that Washington will be hired for a newly created position as an assistant defensive line coach.

That leaves the vacant linebackers position left to fill.

Great, but when will we hire a defensive coordinator????? Babich Patch might be a freind of Lovies, but he is a lousy defensive coordinator
TGMB

Agree with TGMB on the Babich Patch. Lovie wanted a puppet and that is what he got. Babich will be gone by the end of next year.

Big deal. Smith can't coach for crap at this level so why should I believe he could tell if anyone else could coach worth a darn. It's futile to debate what the Bears should or should not do in preparation for next season and beyond. As long as Lovie is here the team will continue failing to reach its potential because Smith can't do his part. He's not head coach material. Maybe he should stay at a Holiday Inn Express the night before a game. Even better... every night.

Hey lovie while yur at it why dont you replace Ron Turner,Bob 'the puppet Babich and well i was gonna say you but i think youll be a good coach but you really made some big mistakes letting go of Ron Rivera.I know he was a cover2 guy but he is prolly the best def co in football!

Goodmorning fellow bear fans! Just another day where the bears dont make any real changes. You want to make a real change! Get rid of all the coaches especially Ron "have one page in my playbook"Turner! These coaches single-handedly lost the superbowl for us. All right, maybe we had an easy scheduele but either way we got there and the coaches drop the ball and there pants because they got caught with them down.Maybe we should get new ownership. There's some food for thought!Well im getting sick to my stomach so i have to go. Remember, there is no bad players only bad leaders! Well except for Rex and Benson! -The Pooh

Lovie made a big mistake in the draft last year, he should of made a trade and drafted a quarterback or somebody that was going to make a difference in the game.

Has anyone here ever heard of team loyalty? Babich isn't as bad as everyone thinks. To run the cover 2 you have to have a hard hitting smart strong safety which the Bears where lacking this year. The big mistake was Archuleta. The team thought he could revive his career and with that in mind they traded Chris Harris which ended up bitting the Bears in the a** when Mike Brown went down. Archuleta is to slow and can't make a tackle. I do think the problem with the offense is who ever is in charge of personnel packaging has lost their mind unless you think on third and short you should throw the ball to John Gilmore instead of first round pick and very talented Greg Olsen or as soon as you put in Hester run a reverse. It is so frustrating you just want to kick the TV.

Ron Rivera was the man and one of the reasons the Bears defense had so much success the last two years. What are we gaining hiring this new coach when there are quality NFL personal out there who would take the job and help round out some of these players. You better get an offensive coordinator and someone who could show the Bears how to run the short passing game and timing routes. A coach who can open up this offense. Smash mouth is great when you have the backs the Bears don't! So you better get use to run and gun passing game! Also our offense made too many mistakes allowing the defense to be on the field more then they should have. They were already banged up! Come on Bears build on this team and get a running back along with a quarter back! Stop wasting time on the part-time quarter backs!

I THINK ALL YOU SO CALLED BEAR FANS ARE OUT OF YOU MINDS! REX CAN BE A VERY GOOD QUARTER BACK FOR THE BEARS IF RON TURNER IS FIRED!ALL THE BAD CALLS RON DOES MAKES REX AND ALL THE OTHER QUARTER BACKS LOOK BAD BUT A OLD BAD LINE DOERS NOT HELP AND AS FOR BENSON THAT WAS ONE OF THE WORST WAST OF A DRAFT PICK YOU COULD HAVE! ALL YOU REX HATERS GO LOOK AT HIS STATS WITH A BAD PLAY CAALER ALL HE DOES IS WIN AND LISTEN TO ALL YOU SAY HE SUCKS BUT

Beat GB twice, it was a good year in my book.

yotochan, i see the neanderthal gene is thriving in your DNA. so if the bears went 2-14 beating the packers twice, it was a successful season? good gravy, aim higher.

Cant blame Babich for 57 lost starts to injuries on defense..I dont think Rivera would have done much better. You also cant blame him for letting Alfonso Boone, Scott and Chris Harris go. They retain those guys and they might have gone to the playoffs at least.
As far as qbs go, who do you get. McNabb? Isnt he injury prone? Isnt he getting old? Isnt the offensive line the oldest in the league? Not saying dont consider him, but other things need to be addressed too. There are only so many "elite qbs". Everyone else is mediocre. And if you depend too much on one guy, he will just throw a pick or fumble anyway. It is a team game.

If the Bears don't learn how to judge good quarterback material;
they might as well throw in the towel.
They have not had a good quarterback, since Jim McMahon. Oh, yeah.
They traded him. Something about his not being reliable, because he got hurt a lot.

Hmmm... Lets see. They won their only Superbowl with him, and never had less than a 9 win season, with him as starter. Bet they
would love to get to that level again. Then agin, maybe not.

actually statistically erik krammer was our best quarterback. but he also didnt have the team around him that jim mcmahon did. lets face it mcmahon helped alot those years but he did not carry that team. payton and the defense did. and when payton left neal anderson wasnt exactly a pushover. i still think that rex can be a winning couch but i agree get turner out get babich out for christ sake why arnt we going after singletary at all.

gearhead i agree with you 100%
people seem to glance over how well Rex plays with the consideration of the bad play calls
a bad running back
a bad OL
no go to reciever like all the "good" QBs have
he wins and if we give him what other QBs have than his stats will look better
