Vikes could be down a safety

It will be interesting to see how Minnesota coach Brad Childress handles the situation with starting free safety Dwight Smith.

He was pinched Thursday night by Minneapolis cops and charged with possession of marijuana.

Here's more on the situation:

Smith was suspended for the Vikings' season opener last year after an escapade in downtown stairwell for which he was cited for indecent conduct. Minnesota is in the playoff race right now. The Vikings were not when in the 2006 opener. Who knows if the must-win nature of Monday's game vs. the Bears will effect Childress' decision.

“We’ve been extremely proactive with the first precinct police officers and the inspector,” Childress told media in Minnesota. “The allegations are under investigation and I’ll have further comment after more information comes to light.”

Stay tuned on this one.
