Leonard Peters, an undrafted free agent from Hawaii, is expected to join the Bears practice squad Wednesday provided he passes a physical.
Peters was signed as a free agent by the New York Jets, where he impressed early in the spring, but was among their final roster cuts.
He's known for being a big-time hitter and will fill the void in the secondary created by the loss of Kevin Payne to a season-ending broken arm.
The Bears had been alternating between S Josh Gattis, who was promoted to the 53-man roster, and WR David Ball on the practice squad. The injuries in the defensive backfield forced them to look to Peters.
