Chicago is getting ready for its big Olympics sales job.
Members of the International Olympic Committee arrive here Thursday for a key visit. Chicago's bid team will put its best face forward as it tries to convince the members that Chicago should host the 2016 summer games over Tokyo, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro.
If you could tell the IOC members one important thing to know about Chicago, what would it be?
This blog brought to you by the Sun-Times editorial board (click on names to read bios):
I would tell the IOC that the majority of Chicagoans do not want the Olympics, and the city is run by a corrupt little runt that cannot be trusted! GO RIO!
I would tell them that Chicago's citizens don't fully understand the committment they are being asked to make and that when the citizens finally realize that there may be some uncertainty about whether we want the Olympics at all. London is experiencing that realization right now (several years too late). The leaders have openly expressed that they would not have pursued the 2012 bid if they knew then what they know now. I think it's time that our citizens each make an individual effort to get educated about the economic costs and benefits of the games. We can start by checking out websites like 'A Balanced Discussion'.
If we all stop listening to what the bid committee tells us and start asking them the tough questions, then we might get some useful information that will help us decide if we want the games. I haven't decided whether I support them, but I do know many of us are under-informed. I just hope we start reading more substantive material about the games before it's too late.
It's nice to see somebody on the Sun-Times site is blogging about the Olympics in Chicago.
Sports Pros(e) uses their space to write about video games and gigantic cheesburgers.
Thank you, K. Grossman!!

I would tell them that if Chicago gets the games, they should invest in some construction firms with strong ties to Bridgeport. I would also tell them to use city cars whenever possible, so as to avoid the city's parking ticket scam, and to make whatever purchases they plan in Dupage County.
I would like jack higgins to show a cartoon of the city of Chicago for sale with Daley's picture.
has anyone used public transport lately in chicago?
overcrowded trains and buses that smell , don't get me statred on the homeless who use it as a American Idol audition or to panhandle or just curse out loud.
how the heck will it handle 500,000 plus visitors?
what can this great city do to eclipse the last opening ceremony?
what is chicago famous for? al capone and pizza
i can just see the show now ., it opens with the old 1920's cars racing out around the track to sweet home chicago them tommy guns blaze out and we see the good ol fashioned drive by.
next we have exploding gerdano's pizza and a tribute to the greatmen of out city Rod Blagoivich , Drew Peterson and Obama.
Did I mention the 1000 ft inflatable Michael Jordan straddling the sears tower..... can't wait
The whole Olympics in Chicago thing is embarrassing. We have one of the worst public school systems in the country and we want to parade the Olympic Committee around pretending everything is great here. Pathetic. Focus. Focus, on the potholes that keep destroying vehicles and maybe throw some of that parade money to the teachers at my daughter's school who don't have copy paper or decent computers. Traffic, that's what I foresee. It's bad enough we spent an obscene amount of money on Millennium Park, but the Olympics, please.
i would tell the ioc to come into the chicago neighborhoods. there they will see that some neighborhoods are crumbling, the streets are full of potholes, there are more young people walking the streets due to a lack of jobs and that the mayor is selling every asset that the city has (toll, parking meters) that hurts citizens even more. that i for one don't visit anyone in chicago because my friends have to buy parking stickers for their guests to park in their neighborhood not to mention the budget shortfall the mayor keeps complaining about even though he got a billion dollars for the lease of the parking meters that the citizens will be on the hook for for the next 75 years.
Dear IOC: Chicago is the most corrupt city in the world. Please do not support us. All the money the Olympics would bring to Chicago will go directly into the hands of Mayor Daley and his buddies. Your coming here will mean higher taxes (even though we have the highest in the world, do your research) and we don't need them, or you. Please stay away. We have enough problems to deal with alone, because we still can't figure out why the city and county and CTA and schools are broke, yet the mayor and his crew have signed away to private vendors BILLIONS worth of contracts - where does the money go? The same place all your olympic money will go - to the Mayor and his friends. We don't need anymore of that happening. Please, stay away from here.
I would tell the Ioc that in 1904 Chicago's bid won and they were to host the Olympics and then it was taken away and given to St. Louis to go along with the World's Fair they were having at the same time. It wasn't right for the IOC to give and take away. Chicago deserves to win based on the beauty of Chicago, the closeness of the events to the planned Olympic village and all of its preparation.
Dear IOC:
Please do not let Chicago officials fool you. Please insist on visiting some of the crumbling and poorest neighborhoods in the City, such as South Side of Chicago. Then you can let your conscience to decide if you want to be a part of Chicago's corrupt polical machine.
If you still do want to reward the Olympics to Chicago, which I totally understand, because many of your official members are coming from lineage of aristocrats, dictators, and corrupt officials themselves; then at least I can say the IOC is though superficial and corrupt, but consistent.
Regards,
I will tell the IOC that chicago should have the Olympics. This will be the first time that chicago will ever have the Olimpics. Even though the city is not all up to par, who knows, chicago might be able to kick it off.
I think chicago should have the Olympics. It will make chicago look even better, from what it really is. Chicago brings excitement, fun, lights, camera, and action.

I would tell the IOC that Daley is on the verge of laying off eleven hundred city workers because the city is, quite simply, flat broke! The IOC should visit underserved neighborhoods, a failing school system, and see the appalling lack of affordable housing in this, the most overtaxed, corrupt city in the country! Then the IOC would realize that This city and our corrupt mayor, do not need, or deserve, the Olympics!
Mayor Daley's mi lassie. The Olympics in Chicago is unfolds as another Richie Daley tribute to his legacy. which more importantly should a financially broke city, one of the poorest school districts in this country and crime which no one has figured out how to perform. Daley, don't spend one red cent of public money on this ordeal of yours unless it is yours and Patrick Ryans personal contribution which covers the cost of any losses. Now putting it where it is, do you still want to have the Olympics here? With your millions you should be able to just about cover it!
