On Monday, Sen. Dick Durbin said he was asking President Bush to release former Gov. George Ryan from prison early, after the corrupt governor spent a little more than a year behind bars.
His sentence is 6 1/2 years.
On Tuesday, the Chicago Sun-Times editorial page criticized Durbin's decision. You can read the editorial here.
What do you think of springing the 74-year-old former governor from prison?
Let us know in the comments section.
This blog brought to you by the Sun-Times editorial board (click on names to read bios):
Dick Durbin says he asked President Bush to pardon George Ryan, "because it's the right thing to do". Funny he didn't feel that way before his re-election to another six years. He only does it NOW, because he knows we would all vote him out of office!!!
only a year? let him out after 3
If Ryan had not elected to put down the death penalty in Illinois, none of this would have come to pass. His only fault justify a wrong. Check any of the previous governors, what he did, said, who he communicated with and endorsed, i.e. you do me a favor and I'll do you one, and you'll see Ryan did no differently than the previous governors and the one after him. We see the City being sued for errors and the State also. Nobody cared if the wrong person was in jail for whatever crime as long as on the books it was solved.
I commend Senator Durkin for putting politics and public relations aside to embrace the higher moral standards of forgiveness and reconciliation.
I sincerely hope that President Bush will indeed act on behalf of Governor Ryan.
I think George should leave jail after he serves his full sentence. He has yet to apologize for his wrong doing or accept any responsibility for the deaths of those children that died when their van caught fire. We need to teach these politicans that when they misuse our trust, they will pay the price not get our sympathy because of their age.
He did the crime----he should do the time....
I have no problem with that. As long as Sen. Dick Durbin spends the remainder of Ryan's jail time in prison.
We all should have a little compassion. And yes maybe Ryan made mistakes, but he also dedicated his life to serving the Public. Which is a very hard and ungreatful job.
I quesss from all these comments we can assume that no one has made mistakes in their life. Hopefully, all of us are so innocent that we will never be in the sitatuion where we need to count on other peoples compasssion, especailly when we only have a few years of life left.
I for one will Pray for Ryan and his family.
he should be let out.. keeping him in jail for what.??
Letting George Ryan out of prison early would be like letting Charles manson out of prison. Both are convicted felons whose crimes indirectly killed people. Think about that Senator Durbin. His good name is ruined ? PLEASE
What was the point of spending all that money to procecute Ryan, just to turn around and commute his sentence? He did a crime,he deserves to sit in prison with all the other convicted felons and serve his time. Ryan was not concerned about the citizens of Illinois when he was doing his illegal activities, why should we be concerned for him now?
I really do not understand why we are wasting our valuable dollars on ink by printing this, Ex-Gov. Ryan has not shown no remorse and will never show any for that family that lost their six children, not to mention the financial end of his scams.
In the article with Lara Lynn asking for his early release she already stated he has no regrets, he chose to live his golden years in prison.
Unbelievable that anyone would even consider letting George Ryan out of jail early.
Did I miss something or was he not charged by the US Gov't, found guilty by a jury of his peers and sentenced by a judge to spend 6.5 years in prison?
Why should he be let out? Or, do those advocating his release feel that all old white collar felons should be released when they hit 72?
George Ryan represents the worst of Illinois' colorful history of corrupt politicians!!!
The media keeps repeating he is at Oxford Wi. prison,he was transferred months ago to Indiana. Why the ignorance on his location? You can bet he wants out of the 'Haute'. People I know who served at the "Haute" say it is s real prison, not a country club.He cannot believe how he was framed!!! hahahahah
Let George Go! Dick Durbin has forgotten the past history of our "great" govenors who have been convicted. He should be old enough to remember the past - I do. Let me count the ways: William Stratton, Otto Kerner, Richard Olgilve, Dan Walker, Ryan and now Blabgonovich is on the ropes. Illinois runs a "clean state". Politicians in Illinois are a joke! Most of our elected officials are crooks. Oh yeah, I almost forgot my favorite, Secretary of State Paul "Cash in the Shoebox" Powell. He died before he got caught. Thompson and Edgar were the only good govenors Illinois has had in 40 years! Let Ryan stay put. He's earned it. Hey Durbin, watch your back. We are.
What kind of message does it send that only politicians with connections deserve compassion? How many people in prison right now have spouses or other family members who are sick or dying? Are they going to have their sentences commuted and be pardoned? Many people in prison are there for offenses like drug use, an addiction, or grew up in situations where they had no access to quality education. What's Ryan's excuse? Just greed and a desire for power. I don't expect politicians to not have to wheel and deal, but to put other people's lives in danger to serve your own purposes is just wrong. We need to stop giving politicians a pass when we don't extend that same courtesy to the regular people.
I love it!!! With our buddy Rod getting pinched yesterday, President Bush would be seen as an even bigger fool if he were to release George Ryan now. It would be an outrage to the American public, specifically those in Illinois.
I am sure Dick Durbin put his neck on the line because he sincerely felt that he could leverage an early release for Ryan. Now, Ryan will not be released and Durbin will have to suffer the repercussions of his actions without his buddy standing by his side.
Richie, I know you are keeping a very close eye on this Rod thing. You know as well as everyone else in this city that he is not going down alone. He will take EVERY last one of you down with him. You can't tell me that Rod acted without impunity for so long and Richie didn't know anything about it.
Chicago politics has always been corrupt and subscribed to "I'll scratch your back, if you scratch mine".
I can't WAIT until Fitzgerald pulls up in front of Richie's Bridgeport home with a couple of black sedans.
ryan spent his entire life in the COMBINE,he is evilcrooked little man. remember he shut down the milwaukee 6 investigation???
