Mayor Daley's plan to cut back on plowing and salting on side streets has been . . . less than successful, early on this winter.
That is if the howls of outrage from residents are any indication.
Today, Ald. Tom Allen is asking the mayor to do something about it. Read the Sun-Times story here.
Let's here your horror stories. Don't leave out the details.

The city said they would not plow side streets during overtime hours, which sounds reasonable on its face. That said, apparently city plow drivers work overtime no matter what time of day or day of the week, because it's been almost two weeks since any of the streets in my neighborhood have been touched by a plow or have seen one grain of salt. And as I drive around the city, it's plain that this isn't the only neighborhood that has been neglected in such manner.
Less salt would be needed to clear side streets if "steam roller" snow plows were used. The heavy roller could crack ice.Slick ice could be tamed by employing a patterned roller that leaves traction producing imprints[think knurling].Potholes could also be filled on the spot with a "steam roller" snow plow[a patterned roller could be left smooth in the middle to easily accomplish this].

I dont understand it,the salt is already bought and paid for by the taxpayers not Daley, each ward has a sweeper driver and when it's 30 degrees they should be in the plows and not in the sweepers, salting the streets during the week not sweeping the main streets like idiots when the side streets are all ice.
I slid through 6 stops signs this morning, mind you I was driving 10 mph, way to go Mayor Daley
So when is the next election for Mayor?
The streets around our school are so bad. A child is going to get seriously hurt or killed from falling in the street. Who is kidding who? There hasn't been a plow in the neighborhoods this season so far. All I can say is - if Daley wins this next election again, someone better check those ballots. I can't understand why this man keeps winning.
Furthermore, doesn't the Olympic committee see the turmoil this city is in? What has Daley offered them that would make this city so attractive to the committee? I just don't get it!
I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT ALL THE FUSS IS ABOUT THE RECENT SNOW FALL..WE DO LIVE IN CHICAGO, I REMEMBER WHEN I WAS IN ELEMENTRY SCHOOL WE SKATED TO SCHOOL ON THE SIDE STREETS,BUILT IGLOO;S IN 67, WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO GET STRANDED IN THE PLAYBOY HOTEL IN 79, AND PEOPLE DROVE OR USED THE NECESSARY TRANSPORTATION TO GET FROM A TO B.THERE WAS NO WIDESPRED COMPLAINING LIKE IT IS NOW DAYS.IT'S NOBODY'S FAULT IT SNOWED BUT WHEN YOU HAVE PEOPLE DRIVING 5 MILES AN HOUR HOW DO YOU SUPPOSE THE SNOW REMOVALE CREW'S ARE GOING TO BE ABLE TO CLEAR THE STREETS. HERE'S THE DEAL AND IT WILL WORK...NEXT TIME THERE IS A SNOW STORM WARNING OR HEAVY SNOW WARNING EVERYONE EITHER STAY AT HOME OR TAKE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION UNTIL THE STREETS ARE CLEARED OF SNOW. TO MANY COMPLAIN ABOUT TO MANY THINGS... WHAT WE REALLY NEED TO DO IS MAN UP TO THE LITTLE STUFF AND COMPLAIN ABOUT THE NON-MOTHER STUFF..CRIME, CRIME,CRIME
since the mayor chose not to plow the streets when we had 3-5 inches of snow, will the drivers who slide through a red-light intersection be liable for the tickets they get?
Chicagoans, wake up! Richard Daley has shown us what what too much time in office can do. Selling off city services and/or revenues, refusal to remove snow from the streets, and a very conspicuous insulation from and ignorance of corrupt practices by his appointees heading city departments and within his administration. Like the Bush administration, the Daley administration needs to end. And like NYC, Chicago needs term limits to prevent future "Daley dynasties".
I catch the Metra train in Maywood - sadly to say that Maywood sucks as far as plowing the snow - I don't understand that the sidewalk is cleared, but not the parking area? Who's responsible for that anyway (Metra or the village?) - does anyone know how I can find out? Maybe the news can go out and take some photos of all the snow that's been piled up in the parking area by the snow trucks
