Many of you, like me, watched Sen. Hillary Clinton's speech last night waiting to see if she would rally Democrats to support Sen. Barack Obama.
Her words were clear: "Barack Obama is my candidate. And he must be our president."
But did you notice she didn't have too many words of praise for Obama as a candidate?
Not much was said about his ideas or his character.
She did successfully spell out an argument that Democrats cannot afford to lose the White House. She also did her job by leading the charge against John McCain. Too bad she spent more time attacking Obama than McCain while campaigning, because now those words are being used against Obama in McCain ads.
While Hillary called for unity, there are still grumblings among her supporters.
The Sun-Times' Michael Sneed reported that New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney said at the convention, "There's a special place in hell for women who don't support women."
And by now you've heard of the "Uncle Tom" flap with State Sen. President Emil Jones allegedly calling Clinton die-hard Delmarie Cobb an "Uncle Tom."
If the Democrats want to win this November, they need to put aside their resentments and name-calling.
Tonight we'll see if Bill Clinton can check his ego and bring the Democrats together.
This blog brought to you by the Sun-Times editorial board (click on names to read bios):
The Republicans are doing everything they possibly can to exploit the rift between the Hillary Clinton voters and the Barack Obama voters. However, now that the Democrats are united many Republicans are getting fearful that the Democrates will win the election. The Country Club Republicans are trying to protect their BIG TAX BREAKS and are in denial of the fact that they have run the economy into a wall. If I were a Republican I couldn't look the average American in the face because of high groceries, high gas prices, utlities and everything else. You guys are a joke.
Actually, Carolyn Maloney borrowed that quote from Madeline Albright.
YOU SHOULD ASK A MEMBER OF THE GOP, I HOPE NONE OF THEM HAD
A HEART ATTACK, THE DEMOCRATS ARE GOING TO WIN THIS ELECTION!
HILLARY IS A CLASS ACT, AND SHE IS A STUDENT OF POLITICS,
THE SISTERHOOD WILL COME ABOARD BEFORE NOVEMBER!
I RESPECT THE SISTERHOOD!
WE CAN'T SPELL S_CCESS WITHOUT U!
It was wonderful to see Hillary Clinton on the podium. Too bad it wasn't to accept the nomination for President of the United States.
Great speech, but I'm still voting for McCain in the fall.
I want to send the chauvanists in the DNC a message they can believe in.
Miss congeniality your pathetic.
To all of you die hard Hillary Clinton backer, I have two things to say to all of you. Please vote for McCain and have all of your and your kids dreams disappear and in the aftermath never say to your kids, you know honey I had a chance to stop this, but because of my conviction I sold you out. The second one is, believe me their will be a time for a woman to become President of the United States if there a United State left. Use your head and think who really own the USA, who was the USA sold to? As a father I scare that my kids all under 20 year old will not have a job by the time they reach 30 year old. If the United State people can't pay their bills What make you think that the nation can pay what we owe to China and the others countries that we owe. And in closing go ahead vote for McCain to prove your point and let your children suffer. Because you have somewhere to move to once this country have been completely rob of all it resources. I beleive that another country will treat you so well since the USA can't support itself, or have you move out of the USA. Country overboard let not throw this country a life jacket let it drown
Can the whole world not do enough for Barry Soetoro? The DNC, the Republicans, and the Media won the election for Obama. What do you people expect? You think Hillary should maybe give a pint of blood to him weekly? Get off her case. Find someone else to rag on or would that be too hard for you? You bloggers repeat this same crap over and over.
YES MS CONGENTIALITY - YOU ROCK
The democratic party partook in activities more UN democratic than the Bush administration. The Bush Administration makes no bones about their deceit and underhanded tactics. The democrats this year lead the democrats to believe they were "fighting the Bush tactics" when in actuality they were perfecting his playbook.
First there is the Ordained Order of the primaries-slanted to favor Obama.
Second they pretended to want to count Michigan and Florida - but they really didn't and
only did when it no longer mattered. They "changed the rules" a point the Obama
pundits said could not be done and criticized Hillary for. But it was okay for them. In
the end, the entire delegation was counted (flip floppers with a definite purpose).
Third the caucus-again slanted for Obama. The only people that have the time to stay there
all day is college students and the educated males that run their own business. They
browbeat the people in the caucus states JUST LIKE THEY BROWBEAT THEM AT
THE CONVENTION. Do the democrats really believe people's votes should count - or should they only count if they're voting for Obama.
Fourth-the democrats are saying nothing that Pelosi took impeachment off the table - is
she the object of blackmail from a thick dirty dosier on her? She should be replaced by
Cindy Sheehan.
Fifth-the democrats are shooting themselves in the foot. The Kennedys are in essence
dead. So attempts by Teddy to make the name relevant again is backpedaling. The
only people that have put the democrats on the map are the Clintons and the
democratic party (jealous bunch that they are) treated the Clintons like dirt both during
the primaries, before the convention and at the convention. The Clintons, whose
CLASS is in an entirely different league than the rest of the scavenger democrats, are
still the only ones putting the democrats on the map. Had the Clintons treated the
democrats like the democrats treated the Clintons- Obama would not have an iota of a
chance. Karma is a strong thing and the democratic party will realize it shortly. The
democratic party deserves to fall apart. Hillary should run as an independent and her
supporters, if her name is not on the ballot, should write in her name on the November ballot and finally let their voices be heard.
Sixth- Obama and the rest of the democrats continue to slap Hillary in the face. Selecting
Joe Biden was nothing more than a very ungrateful Obama and the dems. It's obvious
that he was almost an orphan because he lacks the manners befitting a president-all
he knows is the back stabbing Chicago politics that put him there.
Seventh-The dems are asking the country to change from Bush politics to Chicago politics.
That's like exchanging the Bush family for the Gabino family. What happened to middle
America and honest politics?
It's a good thing the democrats have registered so many new voters because they will need to replace the many that are and will deflect.
IF HILLARY SUPPORTERS REALLY WANT THEIR VOTE HEARD - THEN THEY SHOULD WRITE HER NAME ON THE BALLOT IN NOVEMBER. Then their vote will finally be counted. They weren't counted in Florida or Michigan under the democratic party "sliding rules,' and they were again strongarmed at the convention. Sufferage my ass.
To Miss Congeniality..... what message are you trying to send, that you are a whiney, spoiled brat? If my gal can't be quarterback then I won't support the team!!!! waaaah waaaah
McCain does not have the judgement or temperment to be President and CIC. There are certainly MORE qualified women in the GOP he could've chosen..1) Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison 2) Senator Olympia Snowe are just two for starters. So now you are voting for a ticket who is AGAINST everything Hillary has worked for her entire political career? Show some intelligence! This is not a beauty contest.
Mrs Clinton was not supportive enough. Bill Clinton was very encouraging. Obama's own speech verified that his oratorical eloquence is captivating and essentially peerless.
I find it very interesting that a female Clinton supporter would threaten to vote for McCain, given the fact that he opposes abortion and the Violence Against Women Act. If she thinks that she's spiting the Obama team and the Democratic party by doing that, she's badly mistaken. What she doesn't know is that the Democratic base is now poised to oppose Clinton in any future election, especially here in New York, and especially if Obama loses the election and it turns out that disgruntled Democrats (Clinton supporters) paid a significant part in the results by voting for McCain. Let's face it, Clinton can't win an election without the Democratic base, so it would behoove any disgruntled Clinton supporter to think twice before supporting McCain. If Obama loses this election because of Clinton supporters, the Democratic Party will be in chaos for years to come because Obama supporters will retaliate by siding with the opposition in future elections, which would in effect serve to severely weaken the Democratic Party.
Senator and President Clinton most certainly delivered to Barack Obama.
Miss Congeniality: Methinks thou art cutting off thy nose to spite thy face. That's a dramatically high price to pay for spite. You'd prefer higher cost of living, higher death toll among our military, unaffordable healthcare and college costs just because Hillary didn't win?
Wow. Good luck with that.
Uhhhh NO. Big NO, the Democrats ARE NOT UNITED. I absolutely will vote McCain/Palin on November 4th. If they expected Hillary to help them win it for theM, they should have nominated her. If Obama wanted to the assurity of a win, he should have asked her to be his VP...18 million votes - more than any candidate in the history of our nation. He did not. At least VETTING Hillary would have helped somewhat in healing the rift, however, Obama's arrogance, conceit and bitterness trumped political savvy.
Personally - I'm happy. Hillary should stay as far away from that ticking timb bomb of a candidacy as she possibly can. Rezko, Ayers, Auchi, Soros...it's just a matter of time before the implosion begins.
The Sun-Times' Michael Sneed reported that New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney said at the convention, "There's a special place in hell for women who don't support women."There should be a special place in hell for elected officials who openly admit that they don't know the difference between support and discriminating against qualified people if they don't happen to be women.
What claptrap!! I for one could care less that the whiny,racist,self-centered,self-serving,'old school' CRONES who supported Hillary will now vote Mcain typical of spoiled little brats who thinks the world is theirs to pick a pearl. This is PRECISELY why I h-a-t-e the feminist movement with a passion instead of 'equality' it's become a egotistical whinefest for bored, rich, spoiled, white suburban soccer moms thanks but no thanks and I'm sure Mr. Obama feels the same way.
Its time for Barry Hussain Obama to face the reality. If he wants to win he has to ditch the blowhard from Delaware. There was no Biden Bounce and he is bound to put his foot in his mouth any day. Thats what he does. Hes dragghing the ticket down
Hillary was the choice. She could have brought victory to the democrats finally. But because of arogance and ego Barry made the wrong choice. He went with what he thought was a "safe" choice. He takes the woman vote for granted and goes for the old white guy Washington Insider. trying to score some white male votes because thats what he deperately needs.
His first big decission was a loser and it flopped. Is thgere really tons of excitement over there at the
I resent the assumption that small minded people are suggesting that
we African-Americans are only voting for Obama because he is black.
For the last 34 years that I have been able to vote, I have voted
for white men. We, unlike many other groups, believe in the issues.
We don't mind helping other people who are not doing as well as we
are. We don't mind our money going to help Senior Citizens who have
worked their whole lives. We don't mind our money going to a mother
with kids and can't afford the doctor bills. We try not to sit in
our houses and judge everyone else and then decide what they should do. These same people say they're voting for Palin because she's
anti-abortion but will be the first one to tell you that the woman with the kids who can't afford to take them to the doctor should not have had them. I know that if McCain get's elected we are all in trouble.
