A Chicago suburban teen is hoping to win the National Texting Championship in New York.
Megan Rach of Naperville could win $50,000 for the speed at which she can play a telephone. She's been practicing by sending 100 to 500 messages a day.
We hope her parents have a good phone plan.
Seriously, though, while texting is the cool thing for kids to do, we hope that they don't get so caught up in the lingo of abbreviation that they forget the basics of grammar and spelling.
Some school teachers have reported that students turn in assignment with text abbreviations like "u r" instead of you are. Send those papers back for rewrites.
We hope that this texting culture doesn't diminish writing skills and young people will still learn how to correctly write an essay or business letter.
And please no exclamation points or smiley faces.
