Is New Jersey determined to make headlines, or does it just seem that way? Last month Its lawmakers became the first in the country to abolish the death penalty since it was restored by the Supreme Court 21 years ago. Today, it moved toward becoming the first state north of the Mason-Dixon line to apologize for slavery.
There's a certain poetic justice in that: New Jersey was the last northern state to abolish slavery, in 1846. With the musical "Jersey Boys" taking the country by storm and Bruce Springsteen back on his game with his most recent album, Gov. Jon Corzine is on a roll — the last place he expected to be when he suffered the consequences of not wearing his seatbelt in that awful car crash last spring.
