Sergio Gomez, a popular musician and former Chicagoan, was tortured and murdered in Mexico.
He was the lead singer of a band called K-Paz de la Sierra, which translates "what peace from the mountain range."
His death was anything but peaceful. His American Dream has tragically come to an end.
Gomez, whose family now lives in Indianapolis, came to the U.S. as an immigrant and worked as a house painter. On the side, he started playing music. His band gained popularity here and they eventually returned home to tour.
It's not clear why he was killed although some in his genre of cowboy-style music write "narcocorridos," songs that often glamorize drug trafficking and violence. Gomez's band focused mostly on love songs.
Gomez is one of eight musicians killed in Mexico this past year. It's a shame when artists become victims of violence.
