U.S. Sen. Trent Lott’s decision to step down by the end of the year today engulfed his fellow Republicans in a wave of panic. The conservative, pro-business leader from Mississippi only was about a year into his six-year term.
According to reports, a major reason Lott decided to step down is so he could avoid a new stringent lobbying law on former lawmakers. A law that takes effect on Jan. 1 forbids lawmakers from lobbying for two years after leaving office. Those who leave by the end of 2007 are covered by the previous law, which says they only need to wait for a year.
What do you think? Is this a wise move? Is Lott’s departure a sign the Republicans are in trouble?
