It’s been 14 years since the military let gays in the military as long as they kept their sexual orientation to themselves. Now, 28 retired generals and admirals think it’s time we shove the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy back in the closet.
According to these officials, 65,000 gays and lesbians serve in the armed forces. They shouldn’t have hidden who they are, they said. But others think the policy should stay, arguing that it would be a distraction to let openly gays in the military while we’re fighting a war. What do you think?

America demonstrates its stupidity to the rest of the civilized world every time this topic comes up. Other nations have openly gay servicemen and women. Why don't we? Because the religious fanatics have too much influence over this administration and our elected representatives. America is puritanical and ignorant when it comes to how to deal with the fact that at least 10% of the population is gay. At a time when the military is desperate for bodies and for interpreters in particular, they are still kicking gay people out of the service. If that isn't stupid, I don't know what is.
Mary- I really want to know why anybody in the military would WANT the rest of their squad knowing they were gay? Dont ask dont tell makes sense. Proclaiming otherwise doesn't. The only reason I can think of to want to stop dont ask dont tell is to bring millions of lawsuits for harrasment etc. and to show that military personnel don't love gays.- which i guess would fit in the liberal agenda of undercutting the military every chance they get.
plus, your facts are wrong, 10% of the population is NOT gay. The gay community is a vocal one who would LOVE for people to think 10% of the population is gay. Historically and currently the numbers dont really change, 3% of the population is gay.
Why are the generals and admirals afraid of homosexuals? I'll bet at least half of the gays in the military are pretty good at pointing and shooting. The other half can probably take it like a man.
Seriously, are gays just not good enough? Do they not make good soldiers or sailors? I work with a gay man. I know a few other people who are gay. Other than their sexual orientation they are normal human beings. Believe it or not they were born that way. Can't we just accept them as they are?
The problem with gays is... you give 'em an inch, and they want twelve. They'll demand 3-10% gays at every level of the military, they'll want K-Y in their rations, they'll want the military to spend millions on AIDS & homo sensitivity courses, etc. Just go back over the last 10-15 years since Ellens "kiss" and think about all the crying you've heard and homosexuality you've been exposed to (TV,parades, public swimming pools, hot tub next door, ...)which all started with "We just want to be accepted for who we are". The military will be left with no resources to wage battle, but of course that is the liberal goal.
Incidentally, Mary, it was Bill Clinton who instituted "Don't ask, don't tell. It was not the "religous fanatics", of whom you certainlly cannot include Clinton. Nice try with the 10% figure. And you want us to trust you?
