SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Recipients of the 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys were announced today by The Recording Academy. Joan Baez, Booker T. & The MG's, Maria Callas, Ornette Coleman, the Doors, the Grateful Dead and Bob Wills will receive the lifetime honors.
The Recording Academy isn't just looking back on 2006, it's looking ahead to see who's the next music star. The organization, which puts on the Grammys, announced "My GRammy Moment" today — an opportunity for unsigned artists to vie for a performance with Justin Timberlake at the 49th annual Grammy Awards in February. The long-reigning Queen of Hip-Hop Soul was crowned anew Thursday when nominations for the 49th annual Grammy Awards were announced in Los Angeles and Mary J. Blige led the pack with eight nods for her 2005 album "The Breakthrough." But the big news locally was Lupe Fiasco, who followed in Kanye West's footsteps and made Chicago hip-hop history by claiming three nominations for his debut album "Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor." LOS ANGELES — At this time last year, Mary J. Blige was at a career crossroads. She was about to release a new album of material after her previous effort met with disappointing sales. There were whispers that after 12 years in the business, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul was losing her throne to younger artists. But on Thursday, the Recording Academy reconfirmed Blige’s place in music royalty, showering her with eight Grammy nominations, including record and song of the year for her hit ‘‘Be Without You,’’ off her album ‘‘The Breakthrough.’’
Did you know Chicago had its own "Grammys"? The 26th annual Chicago Music Awards announced its annual slate of nominees today (hit the link, then click on "nominees" for the full list) at the Velvet Lounge. The top award, Pop Entertainer of the Year, includes such luminaries as probable Oscar contender Jennifer Hudson, plus Joan Hammel, Kanye West, Ladi Lyke and R. Kelly.
