LONDON -- Animated films set in Israel and Iran are among five competitors for best foreign-language film at the British Academy Film Awards.
"Waltz With Bashir" and "Persepolis" were announced today as nominees. The British awards, known as BAFTA, are considered an indicator of success at the Academy Awards.
The other nominees in the category are Germany's "The Baader Meinhof Complex," Italian underworld expose "Gomorrah" and French family drama "I've Loved You So Long."
"Waltz With Bashir" is set during Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon. "Persepolis" adapts writer Marjane Satrapi's graphic novel about childhood in revolutionary Iran.
The rest of the BAFTA nominees will be announced Jan. 15. The awards will be handed out Feb. 8 in London.
