'Atonement' leads Globe noms

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — The British historical romance ''Atonement'' led the competition this morning for the Golden Globes with seven nominations, among them best drama and acting honors for Keira Knightley and James McAvoy. ...


"Atonement" is based on the Ian McEwan novel about a shattered love affair.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which oversees the Globes, nominated a total of seven films in the best drama category. Other nominees for best drama are "American Gangster," "Eastern Promises," "The Great Debaters," "Michael Clayton," "No Country for Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood."

Best comedy or musical nominees are "Across the Universe," "Charlie Wilson's War," "Hairspray," "Juno" and "Sweeney Todd."

Best actor in a drama nominees are George Clooney ("Michael Clayton"), Daniel Day-Lewis ("There Will Be Blood"), James McAvoy ("Atonement"), Viggo Mortensen ("Eastern Promises") and Denzel Washington ("American Gangster").

Best actress in a drama nominees are Cate Blanchett ("Elizabeth: The Golden Age"), Julie Christie ("Away From Her"), Jodie Foster ("The Brave One"), Angelina Jolie ("A Mighty Heart") and Keira Knightley ("Atonement").

Best actor in a comedy nominees are Johnny Depp ("Sweeney Todd"), Ryan Gosling ("Lars and the Real Girl"), Tom Hanks ("Charlie Wilson's War"), Philip Seymour Hoffman ("The Savages") and John C. Reilly ("Walk Hard").

Best actress in a comedy nominees are Amy Adams ("Enchanted"), Nikki Blonsky ("Hairspray"), Helena Bonham Carter ("Sweeney Todd"), Marion Cotillard ("La Vie en Rose") and Ellen Page ("Juno").

Best director nominees are Tim Burton ("Sweeney Todd"), Ethan and Joel Coen ("No Country for Old Men"), Julian Schnabel ("The Diving Bell and the Butterfly"), Ridley Scott ("American Gangster") and Joe Wright ("Atonement").

Steven Spielberg will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for his "outstanding contribution to the entertainment field" from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Globes organization.
