LOS ANGELES — The palace drama ‘‘The Queen,’’ the crime epic ‘‘The Departed,’’ the road-trip comedy ‘‘Little Miss Sunshine’’ and the satiric ‘‘Borat’’ were among Writers Guild of America nominees today for best screenplay.

‘‘The Queen,’’ starring Helen Mirren as Britain’s monarch Elizabeth II, and ‘‘Little Miss Sunshine,’’ featuring Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette and Steve Carell, were nominated for original screenplay.

The other contenders for the original-screenplay prize were the sprawling drama ‘‘Babel,’’ with an ensemble led by Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett; Will Ferrell’s literary fantasy ‘‘Stranger Than Fiction’’; and the Sept. 11 docudrama ‘‘United 93,’’ which chronicles the flight whose passengers died fighting back against their hijackers.

Martin Scorsese’s ‘‘The Departed,’’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson, and ‘‘Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan,’’ Sacha Baron Cohen’s raucous look at American culture, were nominated for adapted screenplay.

Also in the adapted-screenplay category were the fashion-business comedy ‘‘The Devil Wears Prada,’’ with Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway; the suburban comic drama ‘‘Little Children,’’ featuring Kate Winslet; and the tobacco-industry satire ‘‘Thank You for Smoking,’’ starring Aaron Eckhart.
